Exploring Deniliquin in 2008

April 25 2017

Some people say Deniliquin does not change and that you can go away for a while and come back and everything is the same.

The other week we wrote about Google Earth being behind the times and it occurred to us that we should expand our report and go through the streets and see what existed in 2008 and doesn’t now.

The below pictures are all taken off Google Earth of some of the businesses that are either now gone or moved.

Google

Go-Lo was still going in 2008 but in 2009 the parent company collapsed, was saved by Retail Adventures and then Retail Adventures collapsed in 2012.

Bank.png

The Commonwealth Bank was in Cressy Street in 2008 and moved in recent years to Napier Street.

Furniture

If you needed some furniture, Deni Furniture Centre was the place to go.

KFC
KFC was still going and at this time was getting the bucket fixed, it closed in 2010.

R&J's

R&J’s – A great place to go to when you needed entertainment like CD’s and more.

Retravisio

Retravision was a big company across Australia until the late 2000’s and was gone by 2012 as the group of companies either split off from the Retravision group to survive or financially collapsed.

shed

This building is a reminder of the death throes of the rail line as it no longer stands.

SP

Subway’s first store in town and Pinky’s Pizza, luckily for Deni another Subway opened up and Pinky’s Pizza is now occupied by That Pizza.

SW

Silly Willy’s before they moved out and Harvey Norman expanded to take its place.

Mits2

Mitsubishi signage was still up in 2008.

2008.png

The former Shell petrol station before its demolition, only the empty signage pole and holder remained by 2010.

Edward Theatre.png

The Edward Theatre still lives on Google Earth but not for long as other views take you to 2010 and 2017.

News.png

The Newsagency before it moved to Cressy Street.

Real Estate.png

One of the quirks of Google Earth is you can go on Street View and going around the roundabout you can see this building go from occupied to empty as time changes eight months in one mouse movement.

Party.png

Deniliquin Party Hire is another business that has moved between 2008 and today, go around the other side of the business on Google Street View and you can see inside as the roller door is open.

Metro.png

Now a Metro station, it was Mobil back in 2008.

Mahers.png

Concept1.png

Big River.png

Big River Real Estate was in Napier Street in 2008 and is now in Cressy Street, it is one of few businesses you can see in the 2017 photographed sections of Hardinge and Cressy Street therefore making it appear twice if you go on a street view tour of town.

As you can see lots has changed since 2008 and the above is just a small sample of the shop changes, unfortunately the lack of high resolution images have hampered efforts to display great images for posterity but we hope you enjoyed our search on Google Street View to present this history presentation.

ANZAC Day (25/4/17)

April 25 2017

ANZAC Day is one of perhaps two of the saddest days of each and every year, the other day that is considered saddest is Remembrance Day.

On those days we look at the long list of the dead and the long lists of those who came back from all the wars that Australia has been part of and we think about how terrible things were for the living and the dead in those conflicts around the world.

We think  about the horrors of trench warfare as thousands dutifully left their trenches to face machine gun and rifle fire with little chance of them returning back to their lines.

We think about the use of chemical weapons that killed many so quickly and physically tortured so many more for years or decades into the future.

We think about jungle warfare and how sides fought with ferocity and desperation to hold on to every inch of land.

We think about the many sea battles that have taken place and what people had to do to survive ship fires or being adrift at sea after their ship or submarine was sunk.

We think about the families of those who went to war as for every person who comes back there is somebody who does not and their death is felt by dozens with devastating impact for the rest of their lives and those who do return are affected as well and it goes down the line of family and friends.

We also think about the psychological battles those who fought in war had to fight inside and outside of war, the moral dilmilma of thoughts and feelings about defense of country, personal morality and religious beliefs (Thou shall not kill) and also the sight of people dying from those who are combatants to civilians must weigh heavily on their minds and we must always hope that all those who come back from combat or general service get the best level of care through those dark times.

Today we live in a world that is seemingly getting very itchy trigger fingers, we have religious believers thinking they’ve been told that their religion should be number one through the use of violence and there is no sharing the world with differing beliefs, we have world leaders who are posturing and acting tough and are willing to put peoples lives on the line to cement their way of thinking and there are those who seek to overthrow a government believing they are the right choice to lead their nation and plunge their country into Civil War.

We think of all the above and feel sadness that so many have died, been injured or affected in the fight to uphold our democratic beliefs through the many conflicts Australia has been part of and we are grateful that they made the choice to be the defenders of our nation despite all the above mentioned horrors and risks.

We wish there was a better way for our democracy to be upheld without the use of violence when some nation or ideology threatens our way of life but as virtually said above there is someone, somewhere that believes the exact opposite and wishes to bring our way of life down with violence and their aggression must be checked with violence.

Our message for this ANZAC Day is to remember the dead, remember those who were injured, remember those who went to fight, remember the families and friends of the living and the dead, remember the psychological strain that warfare brings to those in war and always hope that those who leave our shores in service to the nation come back to our shores alive, healthy and are not mentally scared by what they seen and what they had to do.

Poll Time (20/4/17)

We have three new poll questions on our website for readers to consider for the next two weeks and they are the following;

  1. Should Deniliquin have an Easter Parade in 2018?
  2. Is late night Dog Barking becoming excessive?
  3. What are your thoughts on current Council Rates?

The first question is being asked after one of us went to Bendigo and watched their Parade and wondered if it would work again in Deniliquin and with the Deni Fest happening it could make things bigger.

The second question is asked because we all see reports of dogs barking in town a lot on social media and now we are reading reports of barking in the early AM hours and when that happens you know there is a potential problem.

It is a tricky question because Deniliquin has lanes and people move around all the time and it is natural for dogs to bark at things that move but excessive barking appears to be on the rise and so we are finding out if it is a problem or it is not.

The third is a revisit on a hot topic from last year and that is Council Rates, we are asking if the Council rates are currently considered to be either too generous, just right or are too high.

Polls are on the right hand side of the website for PC users and on the bottom for mobile users and can be answered at any time between now and May 1.

Deni Speaks (17/4/17)

April 17 2017

In this edition of Deni Speaks, we posted four questions on our website for readers to answer and we can now discuss the outcome of the voting.

Questions asked

1. Should the river level be dropped before Easter?
2. Do we need more Police Officers in Deniliquin?
3. Should the ERC establish a recycling program ASAP?
4. Should the Gun Laws be loosened?

Results

100% of voters believed that the water level should not be dropped before Easter.

65% of voters believed that Deniliquin does not need more Police Officers.

87% of voters believed that a recycling should be established ASAP.

Our fourth and the biggest question we’ve ever asked is whether or not Gun Laws should be loosened, voters for the first time had the option of multiple choice to pick an answer from the five ‘Yes’ answers and two ‘No’ answers.

33% of voters believed that the Guns Laws are fine as they are
24% of voters believed the laws should be loosened for Farmers and Hunters
17% want the Gun Laws tightened
14% want the Gun Laws loosened for home protection
7% want loosened laws for Farmers and Hunters as well as Home Protection and introduce Concealed Carry and allow Semi Automatics to be made legal.
5% want Semi Automatics to be made legal.

When tallying up the ‘Yes’ vote and the ‘No’ vote, it is a 50/50 split and this question may need to be revisited towards the end of the year to see if opinion has shifted towards one way or the other.

Conclusion

The general public appears to have confidence in local Police which must be very good for them to know.

The wide support for recycling would please environmentalists and those who are concerned about the amount of cans and other materials left laying about town that are either left there or a long time or eventually end up in landfill and wasted.

Farmers and Hunters may be heartened to know that they received almost a quarter of the votes in the Gun Laws poll, gun control advocates may be pleased they won the individual vote and tied in the overall vote.

Thank you for voting and/or reading our poll results and we’ll be back with new poll results on May 1.
