Pokémon Go stays strong in Deni

Some media outlets have said that Pokémon Go has reached its peak but the game is going strong in Deniliquin with ‘Pokémon Go Deniliquin’ boasting 144 members.

The group is mighty helpful with reports that Dratini was spotted outside Westpac, Ninetails was around the RSL Club, Golem was spotted at Rocket Park and Pikachu is reportedly around the RSL Park and behind The Exchange.

Pokémon Go has changed the world for the better in terms of exercise and social interaction though it remains to be seen how long interest in the game will last once all the buzz dissipates and the serious gamers stick around to complete the game.

Below is an example of the Pokémon that can be caught in Deniliquin and Shepparton, DNS continues to wish all players the best and remind them to please watch where they are walking at all times.

HCF’s closure will hurt locals

HCF’s decision to close the Deniliquin branch from August 11 has not been a popular decision to many locals and those who travel into town for the customer service the branch provides.

It is said that the closure is because people around Australia are apparently putting in claims online or via post and have no need to go into the HCF branch and when people don’t go to the branches then the branches are considered unsustainable and must close and unfortunately Deniliquin’s branch is considered unsustainable.

This closure will be a major disadvantage for some as they may have trouble with filling in claim forms and/or are not computer savvy to do it online and need expert help and the personal touch to ensure that their forms are done correctly.

The staff at HCF in Deniliquin are considered by many to be top class and many are feeling sad that they also lose out despite HCF offering alternatives for the staff (whatever that means, it’s probably not a good alternative).

Supporters of keeping HCF in Deniliquin are being urged to use the contact form online and write down their concerns, so far the replies have been the stock standard business reply but it is hoped that if HCF get messages of the same kind it would force a different kind of response.

An alternative to writing in is by calling them on 13 13 34 between 8am and 8pm (AEST) Monday to Friday and between 9am and 5pm (AEST) on the weekends, please make all calls civil and feel free to share the results of the call with other supporters.

Another option is that Eric Sim Pharmacy has a petition that residents can sign in support of lobbying to keep HCF in Deniliquin.

It is ironic that HCF has the slogan ‘Get More With HCF’ for the closure of the branch means that locals will be getting less than what they had before with HCF.

14mm more for Deniliquin

Deniliquin’s month of May has been spectacular rainfall wise with a total of 77mm having fallen in town since the start of the month.

14mm of the 77mm fell between 9am Wednesday and 9am Thursday and rain is expected to fall again between 11am and 2pm today before clearing up all the way until 5pm Friday with rain starting again in one form or another until early Saturday morning.

Rainfall totals for May could end up somewhere in the 80’s and that is nothing short of a good thing for the town,  the average rainfall till May is 132.3mm and we got 139.8mm so it will be interesting to see if ground is made on the average to June or even passing the June total.

The good news for the year so far is that Deniliquin has now received 21.8mm more than this time last year so that must give farmers great joy and potentially even more joy now the word from the Bureau of Meteorology is that El Nino is over.

DNS will continue to update readers on the rainfall totals as it comes in.

Where is Deniliquin?

Before anyone gets alarmed or mad, DNS knows exactly where Deniliquin is but as many people have pointed out throughout time some people and organizations have no idea.

It is true that Deniliquin gets Victorian TV, Victoria’s 03 when it comes to dialling, the Herald Sun is also the paper of choice but we are not located in Victoria as some publications have listed the town under.

There have been photographs of a dried out river that was said to be the Edward a few years back and that really got people mad as it was damaging for tourism because if people thought the Edward River was dry, nobody would come.

A statement on visitdeni.com.au has gotten peoples attention, the page is very nice with great use of colours and photographs though some of the eating out lists need updating but there’s a sticking point on the front page.

Welcome

The sticking point to people is that it says Deniliquin is ‘The Murrays Best Kept Secret’ which is amusing to some because the Murray River is about a 45 minute drive to the south.

Perhaps the writers say the Murrays because the Edward River is an anabranch of the Murray River therefore it is all the Murrays.

The counter argument to the Murrays statement is that just because the Edward’s water flows from the Murray doesn’t make it the Murray River and Deniliquin cannot be the Murrays best kept secret because that’s for towns that are on the banks of the Murray and we should be the best kept secret of the Edward River.

No doubt this sticky point will reach the eyes and ears in charge of Tourism and perhaps a correction be made for the good of everyone to make total sense, we wouldn’t want tourists driving the roads around the Murray looking for a town that’s just not there because we are on the anabranch of it.

EDIT: Story edited to better explain the position of the debate between being on the Murray and not being on the Murray.

High rates not equaling high service?

Deniliquin residents are becoming very unhappy at the increasing rates with the view by many that the rates ($1700 and up a year before water bills) are too high and also that there is the feeling the money is not going to where it’s supposed to be.

Residents have stated that rate increases have been given without proper notice and the rates model has been inconsistent as people with similar sized blocks have found themselves to be paying different totals.

Residents are unhappy at the state of the roads with the Deniliquin Thumbs Up Thumbs Down Group having lots of comments and photos from residents showing that roads have crumbled, roads that have potholes everywhere and in some cases there are mentions of streets that don’t have a paved road yet and are difficult to travel on in the dry and near impossible in the wet.

There are also reports that the filling of potholes does not get complete with some streets only having a percentage of the potholes filled before they move on to another street and doing the same there and so on and so forth.

A review of comments made by residents gives the conclusion that confidence in Deniliquin Council is not high and this may make many of those on Council very nervous if they are looking to stay in the job and if the merger between Council and Shire happens they’ll be even more nervous with new players from outside of town expected to enter the field.

The potential merger between Deniliquin Council and Conargo Shire is expected to bring in lots of money and better infrastructure though some have pointed out that this new council will encompass more than Deniliquin therefore things may not really change but hopes are always high change will be the order of the day.

Regardless of what happens merger wise, the rates must be reviewed and action on the roads must be done sooner rather than later or there will be an electoral landslide as change becomes more and more desired.
