The Evolution of Deniliquin

It has been said throughout time that Deniliquin is a place that never changes yet upon closer inspection, it has changed quite a lot.

Deniliquin History In Photos‘ and ‘Deniliquin & District Historical Society‘ on Facebook have both since their opening released hundreds of photos showing how much the town has changed throughout time and while change is considered good there is a thought that perhaps too much change has been made.

We’ve seen photos of the Town Hall being the Regent Theatre, We’ve seen photos of buildings being beside Town Hall where nice grass and trees now reside and so much more.

The amount of buildings lost over the decades is staggering and some like the former Community Centre sit empty and slowly being battered to death by the ravages of time and vandalism.

Perhaps the recent securing of the future of the Federal Hotel will begin a time where historical buildings will be kept secure with a firm grip by Council and the people of Deniliquin, Progress is good but history and great architecture should be preserved in great numbers and not left to texts and photographs.

Inspiration found on running track

Deniliquin Little Athletics recently sent some of it’s participants to the regionals in Lake Illawarra and the team by all reports were all excellent representatives of the club and town.

Jaycob Clarke was running the 800 metre race in the U/14 category and the field was very strong in terms of pace but this did not deter him even as the rest of the field got further away from him as the race progressed.

But the story does not end there for after the rest of the field finished their race, they turned around and joined Jaycob as he completed the rest of the eight hundred metres.

These moments were captured on video and has now been shared with the rest of the world, there is plenty a viewer can take from the footage, there’s the sportsmanship and kindness of Jaycob’s fellow runners, there’s the fact those runners clubs and parents gave them great values and then there’s Jaycob who shown that no matter what the result is going to be just keep going to the end.

Participating in a regional is an honour but this regional is no doubt now considered a life changer and one that is etched into history for all the right reasons and more.

A Grade’s training well

Pre-season training is well underway for the Deniliquin Rovers Netball sides and Grade A Netball coach Janice Hilton has been presented with a large number of players to choose from.

The Rovers came so close to taking out their first premiership last year and the hunger to take out the premiership this year is something that drives all members of the Rovers organization from club veterans to the greenest of players.

Players have a couple of sessions to go before the 2016 team is picked and so DNS wishes all the players the best during the final sessions.

Registration for players and members are currently available, the costs are the following

$165 for Senior playing Football and Netball players
$65 for a Junior Football and Netball player
$80 for Adult Non-Playing Member
$50 for Aged Pensioner Non-Playing Member
Free for junior non-playing member

Air plan clipped

Par Avion has pulled out of establishing a Deniliquin to Melbourne and vice versa air service after it’s Griffith to Melbourne service endured a fall in passenger numbers.

It was estimated that a flight from Melbourne to Deniliquin and vice versa would take an hour each way which is one of the benefits for air travel but whether it be eagerly taken up by residents is the question on the minds of people all around town.

It is no secret that some residents prefer the current bus service or the revival of the rail service than an air service but Council appears to believe that an air service is the viable option.

Rail and Bus may take longer for travelers but it is undeniably true that it costs a lot less, Par Avion’s plan was for $149 and $199 levels whilst a bus is around five times lower in cost although it takes an additional three hours travel time.

Is Deniliquin big enough and important enough for an air service? Could such a service be billed as the gateway to the plains (no pun intended)? Could somebody find rail an attractive proposition? Could more buses be traveling the roads of Victoria and Southern NSW?

There’s so many questions to answer and it is hoped by many that Council doesn’t take forever finding out those answers and then acting on them.
