Deniliquin turns Blue

Deniliquin turned Blue today as residents showed their support for their local Nurses and protest against the proposed changes that will affect Deniliquin Hospital.

There were people wearing Blue clothing, there was people and letterboxes with Blue ribbons, there were Blue balloons on fences, Blue ribbons on signs even a ribbon was spotted around Colin too.

The colour support was not the only aspect of the day as several residents held up signs in support of the Nurses and a petition was also being signed by residents throughout the day.

Enthusiasm and support for today has been building all week with numerous Facebook posts being made and demand was so high for Blue ribbon that supplies had to be brought in from other towns to satisfy demand.

The town will remain Blue for some time to come as all good things take time to be done but it is hoped that the change the town seeks will happen sooner rather than later.

Photos of all the action taken by residents and organisers can be seen at ‘Colour Deni Blue‘ and DNS will continue to report on the fate of the proposed changes to the Murrumbidgee Local Health District as it comes to hand.

1998 DNPS Swimming Carnival

On February 27 1998, The majority of DNPS students traveled across the bridge to the Deniliquin Swimming Centre to conduct their swimming carnival.

The weather on the day behaved itself allowing the carnival to go ahead without any interruptions as Summer was going through it’s second last day of the season.

There were 17 Boys in Boyd, 16 in Cobb, 19 in McKenzie and 15 in Tyson and there were 14 Girls in Boyd, 12 in Cobb, 14 in McKenzie and 15 in Tyson making it a total of 67 Boys and 55 Girls in action across 30 events (not including novelty events).

Students in Houses
Boyd – 31
Cobb – 28
McKenzie – 33
Tyson – 30

Total: 122 students

All students were split in three groups with A Grade swimmers swimming in the large pool and B and C Grade’s swimming in the medium pool.

There were no lanes in the medium pool and those who could not swim were instructed to walk through the water but crouched down with the water up to neck height and arms were to move in the swimming motion.

All students were under the shelter which was divided into the four houses but students were free to go into the other sections.

The carnival was a success and soon all students went back to their usual routines until the Athletics Carnival and Cross Country races came around months later.

Wear Blue for Nurses

A proposed restructure of the Murrumbidgee Local Health District is expected to result in community altering changes to the staff structure of Deniliquin Hospital.

The proposal seeks to change the status of two nurse unit manager positions, the downgrading of their roles could have a negative effect on the well being of staff who will have to do more to cover the downgraded roles therefore increasing levels of fatigue and stress.

As staff deal with increased stress and fatigue, the level of patient care could fall as the staff are stretched that little bit further to cover the medical needs of patients every day.

In response to this proposal, the residents of Deniliquin have been encouraged to wear blue on Friday February 26.

Deniliquin is a town where the colour blue is easy to obtain for wearers of the colour blue can be seen in schools, clubs, the local gym and other locations throughout town making the task of turning the town blue a task not out of reach.

Residents also have the option to receive a free ribbon from the Cressy Street Kiosk and at around 11am WIN News will be there as well to file a report on the situation.

So wear blue Deniliquin residents and show that you feel blue about the proposed changes.

‘The Deniliquin Quiz Game’ opens
