Swim Centre to the Rescue

The Deniliquin Swim Centre has come to the rescue of those who are missing out on a regular dip in the Edward River due to the Blue-Green Algae problem by extending opening hours by one hour with the new closing time being 7:30pm every night.

The opening and closing hours of each day for the month of March are now the following;

Monday to Friday  – 6am to 8:30am and 3pm to 7:30pm
Saturday and Sunday – 1pm to 7:30pm

The extended hour is great for the town as weather conditions are still right for many early mornings and late afternoons of swimming, DNS hopes that residents will take up the extra hour and enjoy a good afternoon and night out.

Relief ahead for Deniliquin?

Predicting the weather has been a difficult task with temperature expectations changing daily which is no doubt frustrating for residents who are seeking relief from the heat.

Weatherzone is predicting that Deniliquin’s hot weather will be easing from Sunday with temperatures running between 32 and 33 degrees from Sunday to next Wednesday which is far more comfortable than Friday’s expected top of 38 degrees.

Rain is on the cards for the entire week with odds being no less than 50% for each day but the best chance of rain appears to be on Saturday until next Tuesday with rain totals predicted to fall between 1 to 5 millimetres for each day.

Rain Chances (days expected between 1mm to 5mm)

Saturday – 90%
Sunday – 70%
Monday – 50%
Tuesday – 80%

We can only hope that the prediction of rain comes true and the farms and yards throughout Deniliquin gets the drink it deserves as residents gets the cooler weather they deserve.

Blooming Algae in the Edward River

It is now confirmed that Algae Blooms have occurred in the Deniliquin region including the Edward River and it’s branches.

Farmers are advised to keep a watchful eye on all their stock, yard dogs and personal pets and to also watch for the following if any of them have entered the water in recent days.

– Dull
– Off feed
– Trembling and/or staggering
– Drooling
– Diarrhea
– Unable to stand

Everyone must not to get into or drink water directly from the Edward River and it’s branches until you hear of the all clear being given by the experts, we know the weather is hot and the River is an easy and cheap way to cool down but it is not worth the risk.

DNS also advises readers to continue to check the Deniliquin Veterinary Clinic Facebook Page and the DPI website on Algae alerts for all the latest information, DNS will continue to report on the situation as information comes to hand.

Deniliquin joins relief effort

Times are tough on farms across the country, rainfall hasn’t been at levels where it is supposed to be and it is killing crops and animals despite desperate and costly measures by farmers to keep things on an even keel.

Burrumbuttock Hay Runners has been a many times conducted effort to provide relief to farmers, earlier this year hundreds of trucks loaded with Hay made it’s way to Queensland to farms where it was needed the most and now an even bigger effort is scheduled for March 30.

Deniliquin is an active participant in this new effort with Purtills offering to match residents donations of fuel cards to the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners up to $2000, To make your donation simply go to Purtills and purchase a fuel card and ask for it to be donated to Burrumbuttock Hay Runners, the amount you donate will then be matched and your name (if you choose it to) will be added to a spreadsheet and given to organizers in Albury.

Gold coin donations can also be made at Bakers Delight as well as every Deniliquin Rams training session conducted during this month of March so if you have got any gold coins and you want to use them for a good cause then this is one that will tick most if not all your boxes.

Money donations can also be given to ‘The Rotary Club of Sydney’ and the details are the following

BSB: 062 438
ACC: 10211156
Description: Drought Appeal

Or send Cheques Payable to “The Rotary Club of Sydney Drought Appeal”
Post to Rotary Club of Sydney, GPO Box 1523, Sydney NSW 2001.

This effort shows humanity at it’s finest, the desire to help a fellow human being is something that is both special and long lasting and in the end the effort lasts into the future as millions of people are kept fed and hard working families hold on to their farms to continue to what they’ve done for many years beforehand.

Where is the sweet spot of Town?

Google Earth is a wonderful tool, it can give you outdated but wonderful shots of areas to see how things have spread out or decreased over time.

So DNS has taken a look to see where could possibly be the residential sweet spot, the sweet spot is where all needs are covered without traveling far.

Schools

The Distance between the Henry Street corner of Deniliquin High and a gate of South School is roughly 300 metres so families close by don’t have to travel far.

The distance between TAFE and Deniliquin High is about 1.1km on the road.

North School and Deniliquin High is around two and a quarter kilometres in a straight line from each other or if you draw a Path on Google Earth it could be as far as 2.5km.

Edward School is around 1.6 kilometres from Deniliquin High School and the Christian School is roughly 2.2km from Deniliquin High School.

St Michael’s is roughly 450 metres from Deniliquin High depending on which gates you use at both locations.

So North School and Christian School are both roughly the same distance from the High School but are both located in different parts of town.

School Buses are a valuable asset for those who go to the High School from the North Side and those areas that are on the fringes of town on the other side of the Edward River.

Food

From the corner of Henry Street and Junction Street to the East End Store on Crispe Street is roughly 250 metres.

The East End Store is the closest store for up to 3 kilometres of residential housing and properties in the south direction (towards Pretty Pine).

In a straight line, the distance between Central IGA and Coles is around 900 metres whilst there are no Supermarkets in North Deniliquin unless you count Coles Express which is also a Service Station, residents will have to go over the bridge to get their weekly shop.

Is it possible that Deniliquin’s major shops are too centralized? Could an ambitious developer find it ambitious enough to build a small Supermarket on the North side to supply those residents in that area?

Entertainment

Entertainment is in no short supply in Deniliquin with virtually all sides of town having a place nearby.

The west side has the White Lion being the only establishment on that side but can be seen as not the weakest side of the entertainment spectrum.

The North has the Edward River Hotel and Sportsmen’s Arms Hotel/Motel and the East has the Coach House Hotel Motel, RSL Club and the Bowling Club.

The centre part of town has the Globe and the Exchange with the Exchange closer to the East than the centre of town.

The South has the Railway Hotel and it would be the closest port of call for many residents who have to go by foot but car makes it easier to visit any place just make sure if you are having a big night a non drinking driver is available to take you back home.

Shops

Most of Deniliquin’s shops are on Cressy Street, Napier Street and George St whilst on the North Side, Davidson Street has the majority of shops although on Davidson Street businesses are spread out over several hundred metres.

Deniliquin Plaza is located on Hardinge Street which houses Coles, Green Pepper Pizza and The Reject Shop whist Harvey Norman and Mitre 10 are also on Hardinge Street.

Conclusion

Living in an area between that is between Junction Street and Napier Street may be the sweet spot as everything is in walking distance from Schools to Entertainment but residents have different tastes in terms of vehicle traffic, sounds of every day life and other factors in their search for the perfect location.

Best advice is for people to check out TLC Real Estate,  Ray WhiteElders, Big River Real Estate and Kevin Cole Real Estate to see what’s on offer for you in order to make the best possible decision on where you want to live or where to live next time a move is on the cards.
