The 1916 postcard

On December 22nd 1916 a postcard was written with the aim of it being sent to a place named ‘Carrigan Villa’ on the corner of Edward and George Street.

Edward must be Edwardes and that would put the place next to the Baptist Church.

EG

The would of been recipient of the postcard was Connie and the writer was a Jean Williamson who wishes Connie a Happy Xmas and a prosperous new year as well as talking about an Albert who was on the Salisbury Plains and was going to France and Jean will send a longer letter next time.

The postcard was brought online for the picture of the bridge on the other side of the postcard as most postcards offered online are blank but this postcard has left us with questions

Who was Connie?
What was Carrigan Villa?
Did Albert come back from France?
Did Connie get a letter instead?
Is any of Connie’s relatives still in Deniliquin?

Does anyone have the answers to any of the above questions?

The reason why it wasn’t sent seems to be clear, there was no place to put the stamp without covering up the address plus the writing was overlapping but almost 101 years since this postcard was written it still has our attention and that is the power of history and curiosity.

EDIT: It is considered that what looked like a B is a C so what was considered to be Bonnie is Connie and Barrigan Villa is Carrigan Villa.

Poll Time (16/5/17)

Our question on what one service would a person want brought to Deniliquin was as most readers know an unexpected success and so after going through the four most popular selections that we haven’t already covered, we are asking four additional questions based on the next popular four selections.

The four questions up for polling are the following;

1. Does Deniliquin need a Kmart?
2. Does Deniliquin need Natural Gas?
3. Does Deniliquin need a Dog Park?
4. Deniliquin Swim Centre needs……..

The poll questions can be found on the right hand side for computer users and on the bottom for those who use phones or tablets.

Readers can check up on results every morning for the first week in our morning news report on FB.

Polls close on May 29 and we will have the results listed in the new edition of Deni Speaks on that same day.

Deni Speaks (15/5/17)

May 15 2017

In this edition of Deni Speaks, we posted four questions on our website for readers to answer and we can now discuss the outcome of the voting.

Questions asked

1. How do you rate the local roads?
2. Would you use a Deni to Echuca hourly bus service?
3. Should Deniliquin have an Indoor Play Centre?
4. Would you use a Deniliquin to Echuca train service?

Results

64% of voters said that local roads are ‘Terrible’, 29% said they thought the roads were ‘Good’ and 7% of voters said the roads were ‘Perfect’.

It was a tie on the question of whether or not people would use an hourly bus service between Deni and Echuca, this question shifted back and forth between yes and no before a late surge in voting tied things up.

80% of voters said they think Deniliquin should have an indoor play centre, this question has been a popular one for many residents for some time and the results back up their enthusiasm for such an attraction

81% said that they would use a Deniliquin to Echuca train service, this has been a decades long wish for residents who wish for the region to be reconnected to Victoria by rail.

Conclusion

Residents will be expecting the ERC to get a move along in making sure roads are relatively smooth and/or pothole free as residents are getting unhappy with conditions and the seemingly lack of service for their rates.

Whilst voters were split on the bus question, it may warrant further investigation particularly if it can be found to be viable and a stop gap until rail returns.

An indoor play centre would be majorly beneficial for the local area as its flexibility would allow locals and visitors to enjoy fun activities year round without worrying about wind, rain, hail or excessive heat.

The rail question deserves to be looked at a local, state and federal level it and would be a handy topic come election time as it would be a financial win to the area and both the state of NSW and Victoria, it has been far too long since Deniliquin has had the ability to buy one of these.

A new series of Polls are currently being thought of and we’ll be back with a new edition of Deni Speaks two weeks after polls commence.

Old Train tickets found

Collectors of local historical items from town have found two train tickets from the days where you could take a train ride into Victoria.

The two tickets are ones from Deniliquin to Castlemaine and Deniliquin to Echuca and both tickets are no wider than a ticket you would get from an arcade machine.

Locals have been pushing for the re-establishment of the train line to enable users to once again to into Victoria and the vision of past tickets may make people more eager for such a service to resume in the future.

The development of an Air Freight Hub appears to be the focus of Edward River Council though several locals think that is either pie in the sky stuff or is won’t take off like the Ethanol Plant that was planned for the town in the past.

Deni Cares (May 2017)

May 11 2017

Last year we wrote about how Deniliquin cares for others and we’ve had a look around to see what is going on now.

Deniliquin has some fundraisers going on GoFundMe and below are some of the fundraisers currently going on.

The ‘Fund for Sarah Knight & baby’ fundraiser has almost reached its $10,000 goal with $9,220 raised in just 28 days and should get to the goal in a short amount of time.

Fundraising for Elisabeth Byrne has raised $8,410 out of its $10,000 goal and there is a ‘Welcome Home Lissy’ event at the Boat Club on May 13 which will be a family friendly event and will run from 12pm to 9pm.

A month ago, one fundraiser was established for Scotty to get some guns, nail guns that is so if you want to help with that you can by clicking on the link.

There are other fundraisers going on but some are several years old and they may not be running now but you can see them on the above link.

It is always great to see people caring about the welfare of others and we hope it continues on throughout time.
