Algae remains steady

The wait for the all clear on the Blue-Green Algae threat on the Edward River and it’s branches continues.

The DPI has issued an update with the situation remaining steady on Red Alert, this is bad for those who were hoping the Algae would be cleared to enable river use once again.

Residents are advised once again to not touch the water from the Edward River and Farmers are advised to watch their properties for any sign of Blue-Green Algae, it is also recommended that animals should not drink or bathe in the Edward River and it’s branches.

DNS will continue to report on the situation as it continues to unfold.

The rain has fallen

After a long wait, the rain finally fell in Deniliquin during the early hours of today and has continued well after the sun has risen.

The rain has been a welcome sight for residents as the town has had Summer like conditions in what is now the third week of Autumn.

It was a frustrating journey to this point of time as weather forecasters have predicted rain on several days only to retract the prediction by the next day leading to frustration as lawns, plants, animals and farms were affected by the high temperatures.

It is expected that the rain will stop at around lunchtime with a nice but windy afternoon expected, Temperatures are expected to stay below 30 until next Wednesday before going back below 30 for an unknown amount of time.

In honour of the rain falling, below is a list of some of the songs out there with the word Rain in the title, some of them are considered classics.

Rain – The Beatles
Rain – Dragon
Summer Rain – Belinda Carlisle
Blame it on the Rain – Milli Vanilli
Wish it would Rain – Phil Collins
Raining in my Heart – Buddy Holly
Purple Rain – Prince
November Rain – Guns n Roses

Know any songs with the word Rain in the title? Let us know or share your thoughts on the welcome change of pace.

Cert 2’s Gardening this year

Last year, a chance look at the ground around two Garden Beds at TAFE led the Cert 1’s studying Access to Work and Training to establish a Vegetable and eventually Flower and Herb garden.

This year, Cert 2 of Access to Work and Training students many of whom were part of the Cert 1 experience are re-establishing the garden, the class is stacked with excellent Gardeners and so with the proper research and effort something fantastic should happen.

Last year’s Garden comprised of Lettuce, Tomato and Capsicum plants as well as a variety of flowers, Marigolds and a range of Herbs.
2016’s group has a time advantage on 2015’s effort but this is only good news for wherever the produce will end up this year.

DNS hopes that the Garden will go well and that some group will benefit from what is grown, the possibilities are endless with the produce could be used by the class privately, given to the Canteen for extra fresh Sandwiches and Salads, given to Charity or sold at the local Market.

DNS will continue to report on the Garden as it comes to hand.

Three days to go

There is just three days to go before the World’s Greatest Shave Cake Stall is running at the Cressy Street Kiosk, the Cake Stall will be running from 8:30am to 11am on Saturday March 19 and lots of tasty food will be on offer to purchase all in the name of a great cause.

As it currently stands on the Facebook event page, 37 people will be attending and 41 people are interested but these numbers will be no doubt much larger as the majority of the town will pass by the Kiosk on the day, readers can visit the event page and express their interest by clicking on the above link.

An estimated 3200 Australians are diagnosed with Leukaemia every year (8 per day) and so fundraising is essential to understanding and combating this devastating form of cancer.

DNS hopes that the town will be mighty hungry and buy as many of the available treats as possible in support of the World’s Greatest Shave that supports the Leukaemia Foundation.
