Rovers Talk (14/4/16)

It’s Round 3 this weekend and all the Rovers action takes place at Memorial Park as the Rovers take on Picola United.

It was a mixed bag of results for both the Netball and Football teams in Round 2 against Blighty.
Rovers Seniors and Reserves will have a good challenge ahead against two very skilled Picola sides but at the end of the day the Rovers are aiming to send all of their Picola guests back home without taking maximum competition points with them.

The A grade netballers will be very determined to win this week after losing to Blighty. They will come out to play with a vengeance against Picola United and will be hard to stop and all of their fellow Rovers teams are raring to go as well.

After the completion of all games, Rovers members should get on down to the clubrooms for the fortnightly membership draw. The draw is conducted around 6:10pm so make sure you are there on time to ensure that you don’t miss out on the chance of walking out with some cash.

For those who love the Rovers functions, clear your shedule for April 30 as there is a mystery function taking place in the clubrooms from 6:30pm. Entry is free, prizes are up for grabs and drinks are at bar prices. Further details are available at the event page.

Lastly for this edition of Rovers Talk, the Rovers Facebook page is just 192 likes away from reaching 1,500 likes which would be a great milestone to reach during this season and begin the march towards 2,000 likes and beyond.

Go Rovers!

The 2016 Cruising Nationals are coming

It is going to be a spectacular weekend for car lovers as The Cruising Nationals are back again, the town will be filled with all the classic cars and more and it kicks off on Friday night (April 15) at the RSL Club.

Friday April 15 is Registration night at the RSL Club, there will be bands playing, food and soft drinks are supplied and alcohol is sold at happy hour prices for those who want to get their drink in.

Saturday April 16 at the Aerodrome is where all the action takes place with 1/8th Mile Drag Racing, Go to Whoa, Dirt Drags, Car and Plane Display and more.

Sunday is the Car Show at the Waring Gardens, there will be cars in the park space of the Gardens and surrounding streets as well, there is also the presentation of Trophies and the drawing of the major raffle.

The major Raffle is offering a 2010 Ford Mustang and a 2015 Harley-Davidson for it’s first and second prizes respectively, the Mustang is fitted with parts from Roush and Roush is known for primarily it’s NASCAR teams (as Roush-Fenway Racing) as well as it’s car part upgrade business and many other businesses created by Jack Roush.

Those interested in going can buy at the gate spectator only passes for the 16 and 17 April with the events at the Aerodrome on Saturday costing $35 per person spectating ($55 if you’re bringing a car to compete) whilst events at the Waring Gardens cost $15 per spectator.

Of course people can be sneaky and just walk around the streets and get a good look at all the cars for free as their owners are buying from the shops or staying in the hotels and motels but events like these do need people to attend so please consider doing both to ensure the best of a good time.

The events at the Aerodrome does create a bit of noise that can be heard for some distance but it should not be a major disturbance for residents, hopefully no visitors and/or locals take the opportunity to do burnouts in the streets during the event and may everyone drive safely to and from the event.

The weather should be an improvement on last year, last years weather was quite dreary but it is expected to be 27 and 25 degrees on Saturday and Sunday so this year will be an improvement in terms of temperature and colour.

Further details can be found on the event’s Facebook page and it’s website.

New Algae Update (11/4/16)

The latest update from the DPI is out and unfortunately despite some high hopes last week that it was going away, the Blue-Green Algae story remains the same.

Levels at Gulpa Creek and the Edward River (Mathoura to Moulamein) have remained steady in mid sections but are still reported to be decreasing at Moulamein.

Wakool River is reading steady, last report had the section at Wakool-Barham Road but now just says Wakool River, it also included Wanganella but that’s now at the Billabong Creek section.

The Billabong Creek report that was just Conargo now expands to Wanganella, the good news is it is decreasing at Conargo but increasing at Wanganella as said in the report on the 9th about the Wakool River.

Overall the alert level remains at Red for the Edward and Wakool Rivers so there is still recommended that there be no activity on the River or make the Rivers a nice place for animals to drink from until the alert changes.

DNS thinks that this situation is starting to become like the video below (play at own risk).

Rovers Talk 9/4/15

Round 2 got underway today with all Rovers teams looking to build on their opening round efforts by doing the same or better against Blighty on Blighty’s home turf.

Netball

A Grade lost their match today against Blighty 53 to 47, B Grade were triumphant in their match 39 to 21, C Grade were big winners with the score at the end reading 59 to 32 and the C Reserves had a tough day at the office with a 38 to 14 loss.

Mixed results for the Junior teams with the Under 17’s winning big with the score 61 to 17, the Under 15’s tried hard in their 24 to 16 loss and the Under 13’s secured a 28 to 17 win

Overall the Rovers had a mixed bag of results on the Netball courts at Blighty but they’ll all look to have a solid Round 3 back at Memorial Park when they take on Picola United.

Football

Rovers Seniors had a tough day today as they went down by 47 points, It was an even first quarter with the Rovers just one point behind before Blighty outscored the Rovers five goals to one in the second quarter to pull away from the Rovers before scoring ten goals to seven in the second half to record the 16.11 – 107 to 9.6 – 60 result.

B. MacDonald booted four, T. Lumbar booted three and D. Hope got two for the Rovers who had only the three to score goals compared to ten last week against Yarroweyah

Rovers Reserves won their game by 38 points after kicking 8.7 – 55 to Blighty’s 2.5 – 17, The Rovers kept Blighty goalless in the first half of the match to set up a 23 point lead before giving four goals to two in the second half to seal the win and remain undefeated.

Rovers Under 17’s scored 22.13 – 145 in a thumping win over Blighty who scored 1.3 – 9, the team kicked 5 goals in the first quarter, seven in the second and five each in the third and fourth quarters making it a solid four quarter effort.

Rovers Under 14’s played a great game to defeat Blighty 6.3 – 39 to 0.1 – 1, the team kept Blighty scoreless for the first three quarters of the match whilst kicking two goals in both the first and second quarters before kicking one each in the third and fourth quarters.

Thoughts

When the Rovers won games today, they won quite nicely and when they lost it was with some pain on the scoreboard at the Netball Courts and Football field but there is no doubting that regardless of the results, all of the Rovers teams will all be pushing for improvement as improvement is the natural course for all teams in all sports as they seek to find the edge the opposition does not have.

Go Rovers!
