Lastly if you just love Pies, Order a Pie

Remember everything

In the centre of town and in the cemetery, the cost of war is etched into metal and stone.

Dozens of Deniliquin residents have died in combat over time and chances are every resident of Deniliquin passes by the War Memorial (Cenotaph) every day and it is all but certain that it is looked at as everyone goes by it.

Every ANZAC Day we hear of spirit and heroics of those who were thrust into combat but today DNS wants to also think about the psychological costs of war the survivors of conflict pay.

From the First World War we read about trench warfare, the heavy rains, the charges from the trenches into oblivion, the constant shelling either killed or drove people mad and the piles of dead in the trenches and open fields.

Second World War was terror from above, war in the jungles where it was hard to see the enemy, camps where food was scarce and disease was running wild,  the masses of dead in camps, towns and cities and so much more.

Korea was fought from South Korea to North Korea and back to South Korea in conditions that were freezing and frantic as momentum shifted almost daily between the UN and the North Koreans and the Chinese (with unofficial Russian assistance).

Vietnam was much like the Second World War but the enemy was everywhere and the weapons of destruction were heavier and deadlier, B-52’s in the air, Agent Orange and Napalm then the images of people fleeing South Vietnam in the final days of the conflict then for years afterward.

Vietnam lasted a lot longer than it’s end in 1975 as there was a decade plus of non acknowledgement as those who went to fight either professionally or drafted were ignored by the masses.

The genocide in Rwanda where Australians could only watch as hundreds of thousands died whilst rules of engagement prohibited them from shooting the killers unless those killers fired on those observing from above.

Conflict in Afghanistan and Iraq where soldiers don’t know if the cars in the streets are just your everyday vehicle or a bomb ready to be triggered and what is the person walking by carrying on them?

The above is a small snapshot of conflict through time, you could add conflicts like East Timor, Boer Wars, Gulf Wars, Malaya and some even ask do we think about the Australian Frontier Wars (English settlers vs Aborigines) that was fought for more than a century in Australia.

War affects us all, those who are killed are survived by their family and friends and they are in pain from the loss of those they love and those who survive war have to remember killing fellow human beings and also seeing the effects of destruction and for some it leads to PTSD, Depression, Anxiety and much more.

So today, think of those who died in conflict, think of those who got through their time in the armed forces, stop and wonder if those who got through it are getting the best in support and care from people and government agencies and hope that those who are currently in the armed forces all get through their time without having to kill or injure others or see something distressing from the air or ground.

Let us all hope that the war memorial doesn’t expand to include new conflicts and more names of dead in the future.

The Rovers travelled to Jerilderie today with teams on both sports aiming to bring home as many wins as possible back to Deniliquin.

Netball

A Grade set out to build on their win against Picola United by defeating Jerilderie but they were unfortunately pipped by two goals in a high scoring match, the score at the end read 49 to Jerilderie to 47 for the Rovers.

B Grade set out to record their fourth straight win of the season and they secured it by winning a tight one, the scores at the end of the match were Rovers 43 to Jerilderie 39.

C Grade aimed to win their fourth game in a row and remain unbeaten just like the B Grade team and they got it with a solid 42 to 32 win over their Jerilderie opponents.

C Reserve aimed to achieve back to back wins and they achieved their aim by winning their match by six goals, the score at the end of the game was 28 to the Rovers and 22 to Jerilderie.

The Junior sides played well against their Jerilderie opponents and below is the results of their games.

The Under 17’s have continued their perfect start to the season by defeating their Jerilderie opponents 37 to 29.

The Under 15’s unfortunately faced a red hot Jerilderie side and went down to them 28 to 11, despite this loss there is no doubt the U/15’s will bounce back next week.

The Under 13’s have joined the U/17’s in staying undefeated by defeating their Jerilderie opponents with the scores at the end reading 34 to 5 making it a 29 goal win.

Football

Rovers Football sides were in action against their Jerilderie opponents and overall the teams had a good day.

The Seniors were out looking for a win after their loss to Picola United last week and they got it in convincing fashion defeating Jerilderie by 68 points.

It was a five goal to one first quarter for the Rovers before they added another two goals in the second to take a 41 point lead at half time.
The Rovers then kicked 4.4 to 1.1 in the third quarter and sealed the win with a 3.2 to 2.2 last quarter to end the game with 14.16 – 100 to Jerilderie’s 4.8 – 32.

B. MacDonald and T. Draffin both booted four goals each, S. Cuffe and D. May kicked two apiece whilst M. Braybon and B. Jones both kicked a goal.

The Reserves entered their match in good form and the Rovers shown it to the fullest by steamrolling Jerilderie by 129 points, the scores at the end of the match read 20.13 – 133 to 0.4 – 4.

The U/17’s kept Jerilderie scoreless in the first quarter and outscored their opposition in the next two quarters to lead by 32 points at three quarter time before Jerilderie kicked three of their four goals of the match to win the quarter by two goals and end the game with a 20 point loss.

R. Norris kicked four goals whilst N. Hay, R. Murray and J. Caniglia all kicked one goal apiece in the win.

U/14’s had their first loss of the season after Jerilderie got the better of them in their clash with the scores reading Jerilderie’s 6.10 – 46 to 2.0 – 12 at full time.

The U/14’s were competitive in the first half with only a goal separating the two at halftime but Jerilderie played brilliant football to keep the Rovers scoreless after quarter time to secure to win.

B. Townsend and J. Liu were the goal scorers for the Rovers side.

Thoughts

A Grade will no doubt be disappointed in their narrow loss but they are a great side and will take plenty from the game and continue to improve as the season progresses.

B and C Grade teams must really be happy with their seasons so far as would the Under 17’s and Under 13’s who join their senior colleagues in having an undefeated start.

The Under 15’s are no doubt disappointed they lost after snaring their first win of the 2016 season last week but we all know they’ll be eager next week to get a win at home.

On the Football side, The Rovers Seniors must be very happy to end their two game losing streak with a solid performance and the Reserves must be very pleased with their massive win whilst the Under 17’s are showing they are in excellent form at this point of the season.

The Under 14’s Football side will no doubt be disappointed their winning streak came to an end but they will no doubt be looking forward to starting the winning streak again next week.

Rovers Talk (21/4/16)

Round 4 is coming up this weekend and this week the Rovers are taking a little road trip out to Jerilderie with the aim of leaving the town with as many wins as possible and keep their good run going.

Netball

Rovers Netball teams won all of their games last week against Picola United and they are aiming to do the same against Jerilderie.

A Grade are looking to back up their solid performance against Picola United by winning their second match in a row, B and C Grade teams are looking to extend their winning streak to four matches and C Res are hoping to follow A Grade in winning their second game in a row.

Jerilderie’s Senior teams have played  two games this season compared to the Rovers three and have had mixed results so far with a win and loss in their two games of competition this season.

Jerilderie’s Juniors have had greater success with two of their three Junior sides being undefeated, the Rovers also have two of their three sides undefeated at this stage of the season setting up an interesting weekend of Junior competition.

Below we have how all sides are going at this stage of the season

A Grade (2-1) vs Jerilderie (1-1 and a bye)
B Grade (3-0) vs Jerilderie (1-1 and a bye)
C Grade (3-0) vs Jerilderie (1-1 and a bye)
C Res (2-1) vs Jerilderie (record uncertain)

Under 17’s (3-0) vs Jerilderie (2-0 and a bye)
Under 15’s (1-2) vs Jerilderie (2-0 and a bye)
Under 13’s (3-0) vs Jerilderie (1-1 and a bye)

Football

Rovers Seniors are 1-2 at this point of the season and are looking to turn things around after a 76 point loss to Picola United last weekend at Memorial Park.

Jerilderie’s Seniors are 0-2 and they are hoping to notch their first win of the season at the expense of the Rovers, if the Rovers win they have a chance to pass Strathmerton (this weeks bye) and Mathoura who are also on four points.

A Jerilderie win would put them equal on points with the Rovers though the Rovers currently have a 37.86% percentage lead over Jerilderie therefore the positions would not change.

Rovers Reserves are 3-0 and are top of the ladder going into this weeks game whilst Jerilderie are winless after playing two matches and are no doubt hoping to win and get off the bottom of the ladder whilst the Rovers aim to win their fourth in a row.

Rovers Under 17’s are top of the ladder with 3-0 and Jerilderie are running third on the ladder with a 2-0 record just like their Reserves team making this clash another interesting game to see.

Rovers Under 14’s are 3-0 at this point of the season and are running second on the ladder, Jerilderie are running third with 2-0 and once again this game will be an interesting clash as both sides aim to keep their unbeaten record going.

Don’t forget Rovers fans that next Saturday night is the Mystery Function, express your interest in going by visiting the event page, the event is free, food will be provided, drinks are at bar prices and the dress code is wear whatever you like.

Rovers Talk will be back with a new edition on Saturday afternoon or night with all the results.

Haig Studios uploads new photos

Haig Studios has recently updated it’s Facebook page to show it’s likers over 100 pictures from The Cruising Nationals that was held in Deniliquin last weekend.

Car lovers would love the vast array of vehicles that were photographed, all sorts of makes and models were in the Waring Gardens last Sunday and now those vehicles that were photographed are in the history books for all to see and enjoy for years to come.

One photograph shows a car with a Holman-Moody sticker/decal on it and those who know Oval Racing well will know Holman-Moody dominated NASCAR in the mid to late 1960’s with the organization building cars that won 48 out of 55 NASCAR races in 1965,  winning the 1967 Daytona 500 with Mario Andretti and winning the 1968 and 1969 championships with David Pearson (#2 on the all time NASCAR winners list).

Also recently uploaded onto the page are some nice panoramas of the Great Ocean Road, the Great Ocean Road is considered one of the crowns in the jewel of Victoria and the pictures show the natural beauty at it’s finest.

Check out all the photographs and more on their Facebook page and stop by their website for photographs from past years of events and more.
