Rovers Talk (30/4/16)

The Rovers were back at home today with teams from both sports aiming to keep their good start to the 2016 season going.

Netball

A Grade set out to get ‘The Meatloaf’ today and they got it with a comfortable win over their Strathmerton opponents.
The scores at the end of the game read Rovers 6o to Strathmerton 47, a result that would no doubt please the side as they look forward to winning two in a row for the first time this season next week.

B Grade made it five wins from the five matches of the season so far with a comfortable 11 goal win against their Strathmerton opponents who despite their best efforts were unable to stop the undefeated Rovers side from notching up another win.

C Grade aimed to make it five wins from five matches today but it wasn’t their day as they went down 47 to 24 in their match against their Strathmerton opponents, Whilst this loss may disappoint the players they will take plenty from the match and put what was learned into next weeks match.

C Reserve went in to today’s game aiming to make it three wins in a row and they got it with an 11 goal win over their opponent, C Reserve are now 4-1 for the season and are no doubt feeling good about their chances this season.

The Junior sides played well against their Strathmerton opponents and below is the results of their games.

The Under 17’s have made it five games from five matches with a nice and neat 14 goal win, the scores were Rovers 39 to Strathmerton 25.

The Under 15’s Rovers side had a great battle with their Strathmerton opponents but fell short with the scores at the end of the game reading Strathmerton 32 to the Rovers 28.

The Under 13’s have continued their undefeated start to the season with a very comfortable 14 goal win against their Strathmerton opponents, the scores at the end of the game read Rovers 32 to Strathmerton 18.

Football

Rovers Football sides were in action against their Strathmerton opponents and overall the teams had a good day.

The Seniors were out to win two in a row after defeating Jerilderie last week and they won in convincing fashion with the final margin 53 points

It was a three goal to one first quarter for the Rovers before they added another two goals in the second to take a twenty point lead at Half Time.
The Rovers then kicked 2.3 to 0.4 in the third quarter and sealed the win with a 4.4 to 1.0 last quarter to end the game with 11.11 – 77 to Strathmerton’s 2.12 – 24.

T. Lumbar topped the goal kickers list with three goals, S. Cuffe and D. May kicked two goals apiece whilst B. MacDonald, D. Hope, T. Draffin and N. Braybon all kicked one goal apiece in the win.

The Reserves entered their match being undefeated and the side ended the day still undefeated after flattening Strathmerton by 98 points, the scores at the end of the match read 16.9 – 105 to 1.1 – 7.

B. Ezard topped the goal kicking list with five, D. Kirby kicked three, L. Fleming and J. Parsons kicked two goals apiece and M. Johnson, K. Shephard, J. Mercer and J. Cooper all kicked a goal each in the win.

The U/17’s went into the game with a 4-0 record and they ended the game with the record now reading 5-0 after defeating Strathmerton by 39 points.

The Rovers kicked 12.10 – 82 to 6.7 – 43 with D. Kirby topping the goal kicking list with five, R. Norris kicked three whilst B. Sartore, R. Gazzara, T. Bradford and J. Caniglia all kicked a goal apiece.

U/14’s had went into todays game hoping to get back on the winners list after their loss to Jerilderie last week but unfortunately they went down to Strathmerton by just seven points with the scores reading Strathmerton 6.5 – 41 to the Rovers 5.4 – 34.

It was a game full of action as the lead changed hand several times with the Rovers leading at Quarter Time, Strathmerton at Half Time, Rovers at Three Quarter Time and finally Strathmerton taking the final quarter for the win.

R. Murphy topped the goal kicking list for the Rovers with two whilst H. Gardiner, B. Thomson and T. McDonnell all kicked one apiece.

Thoughts

A Grade will be happy to be once again on the winners list and will be now focusing on getting two in a row for the first time this season.

B Grade is doing well though and confidence must be really high as it should with their 5-0 so far,

C Grade will probably be disappointed the winning streak is over but they have the chance to do it all again next week and that is the beauty of seasons because win, lose or draw you get the opportunity to win the next week.

C Reserve are doing well with their record now standing at 4-1 for the season and they will look to make it four wins in a row next week.

Junior teams have had a good season so far with their Under 17’s and Under 13’s sides enjoying an undefeated start to the season.

The Under 15’s will be encouraged by their efforts today despite just falling short against Strathmerton and it may be a catalyst for good form in the coming weeks.

On the Football side, The Rovers Seniors must be very happy to get two wins in a row to improve their season record to 3-2.

The Reserves must be really happy with their early season form and hope that their good form will continue well into the season as they chase Finals and then the Premiership.

The Under 17’s are showing they are in excellent form at this point of the season and they are no doubt aiming to stay in that kind of form for some time to come.

The Under 14’s Football side have lost two in a row but there is no cause for alarm or panic as they have played good sides and the lessons learned from those games will help them in the future.

The story remains the same

Whilst the rain is falling all around town today, DNS casts it’s mind back to February 26 this year when a Red Alert was declared for the Edward River.

That’s right, the Red Alert was issued just over two months ago and it shows no sign of going away as the Blue-Green Algae continues to hang around.

The warning status as of yesterday is officially the following from the Department of Primary Industries and NSW Office of Water;

A red alert warning is currently in place for the Murray River from and including Hume Dam to Lock 9 weir pool, as well as the Edward and Wakool river systems.

These red alert level warnings indicated that people should not undertake recreational activities where they may be coming into direct contact with the water such as swimming, as well as domestic uses including showering and washing. Contact with the water may also pose a threat to livestock and pets.

Livestock owners are advised to continue to check stock water supplies for blue-green algae and to remove stock from foreshores where surface scum is visible or blue-green algae are suspected.

It is not possible to predict how long the algae will remain at high levels. Regular monitoring will continue and the alert will be lifted as soon as the high levels of algae dissipate.

Frustration must surely be building up for many residents whose livelihoods depends on the river being in top shape as this situation continues to drag on putting a clamp on river activities and more.
Some are still wondering if the Murray-Darling Basin Plan is the cause of the Algae that has affected many rivers in Southern NSW as well as a couple further up the state.

A recent call by a Far west NSW MP asking Queensland to give back water for the Murray-Darling system could be the start of something that makes sure the Rivers are properly flowing and lowering the chances of Blue-Green Algae popping up everywhere?

What does flow got to do with Algae? When typing in ‘What causes Blue-Green Algae’ on Google, the following lines is part of the answer;

Waters that flow slowly with low turbulence – such as impounded rivers, dams, or water storages – are at particularly high risk of algal blooms

The Department of the Environment has a page on what it is and this is part of what they say;

Blue-green algae can reproduce quickly in favourable conditions where there is still or slow-flowing water, abundant sunlight and sufficient levels of nutrients, especially nitrogen and phosphorus. In still conditions, surface water may form a separate warm top layer (‘stratification’) in which blue-green algae is able to access sunlight and nutrients. If these combined factors are present for several days, algae multiply and form large ‘blooms’. The process of excess nutrients causing rapid growth of aquatic plant and bacterial life in a water body is known as ‘eutrophication’.

Food for thought as this situation goes on and on.

The Rain is Here!

After a long wait, a decent amount of rain is expected to fall on Deniliquin over the next two to three days.

With this rain expected to change some residents plans, DNS has come up with a music video playlist whilst the rain falls.

Each of the songs at the bottom of this piece contain the word rain in the title and there’s a couple of classics with rain in the title including ‘Singing In The Rain’ which is probably what a couple of kids will be doing during the day.

So enjoy some of the songs below and rejoice as the music needed rain falls everywhere it is needed the most, the good news is that it will continue to rain for some time and as that rain comes tanks will be filling, soil will get a soaking and grass will be regrowing.

Rovers Talk (28/4/16)

This weekend sees the Rovers take on Strathmerton at Memorial Park in what promises to be an action packed day of sport with most of the two sides running close to each other on the ladders of each competition.

Netball

The Rovers A Grade side are looking to win their game against Strathmerton after last weeks close loss to Jerilderie, a win will deliver Strathmerton their first loss of the season and put the Rovers at 3-2 for the season and once again give them ‘The Meatloaf’ with two wins from their last three games.

B Grade are aiming for their fifth straight win of the season to remain undefeated and they take on a side that is on top of the ladder (three wins plus a bye) setting up a First vs Second clash which will no doubt be a fascinating contest.

C Grade are aiming to go for their fifth win in a row and remain undefeated as they take on the similarly undefeated Strathmerton side, the winner of the match stands to be on top of the ladder with a healthy percentage lead over Tocumwal who is also undefeated at this time.

C Res ate their Meatloaf last week and will be aiming to make it three wins in a row in their Second vs Sixth on the ladder clash, a win should keep them second on the ladder with Blighty comfortably ahead on percentage and are expected to defeat Yarroweyah who are having a tough season.

For the Juniors, The undefeated U/17’s are taking on the fourth place Strathmerton side who are currently 2-1 for the season and are in a three way points tie with Jerilderie and Tocumwal which is a situation they would be eager to get on top of.

The U/15’s side (1-3) are running sixth on the ladder and they’ll be taking on the fifth place Strathmerton side in a game the Rovers side is very eager to win and grab their second win of the season.

The U/13’s are looking to keep their undefeated run alive when they take on the third place Strathmerton side, Strathmerton currently have a 2-1 record and is looking to keep pace with the Rovers who are a game clear of Strathmerton whist Blighty and Tocumwal are equal on points with Strathmerton and a Rovers win would be beneficial for both sides.

Football

The Rovers Seniors (5th with a 2-2 record) had a nice win last week over Jerilderie and in the process broke their two game losing streak, A win over Strathmerton (4th with a 2-1 record) would give them two wins in a row for the first time this season, leapfrog over Strathmerton and give the side a very important confidence boost.

The Rovers Reserves (1st with a 4-0 record) had a massive win over Jerilderie last week and are hoping to do the same against Strathmerton opponents who are sixth with a 1-2 record.

The Under 17’s are top of the ladder (4-0) and are a game clear of all sides that have played the same amount of matches as well as those who have had a bye so far this season, they take on sixth place Strathmerton who are 1-2 so far this season.

The Under 14’s are running third with a 3-1 record and take on the fourth place Strathmerton side who have a 2-1 record, the U/14’s had their first loss of the season last week and will no doubt be striving to get back on the winners list at the end of the day.

Weather and News

There is rain predicted to fall tomorrow (Friday) and on Game Day so conditions could be different to what most if not all sides are accustomed to so far this season and so the Netball sides may have to be careful on the playing surface whilst Footballers may have to play slower, tougher, harder to score and energy taxing Football in the wet.

After the games, stick around or quickly go home and return by 6pm for two very important events, the first is important especially if you are a member because the Membership Draw is on at around 6:10pm and there is $200 on the line for one lucky member but you got to be there to win it.

The second important event is the Mystery Function at 6:30pm and as we all know Rovers functions are very good and this function should be no different, just remember it’s free to enter, The dress code is relaxed (wearing something tasteful is a minimum) drinks are at Bar prices, Good food is served and there is prizes, dancing and more, check the Rovers page for further details.

DNS hopes that all Rovers sides have a great game against their Strathmerton opponents and may everyone come through the matches without injury and may they also have a great time at the Mystery Function with their fans.

New photos from Haig Studios

Fans of the work that comes out of Haig Studios will be pleased to know that even more pictures have been released in the past couple of days.

The new shots feature a 1968 HK Holden Ute and the pictures have turned out quite nicely and hopefully the quality and positive feedback from viewers will inspire more photographs to be taken in the future.

In some good news for the Studio, the amount of Facebook likes for their page have gone up by around 50 likes compared to two weeks ago, the total currently sits on 1,075 and may soon reach into the 1100’s before too long.

DNS will keep readers updated on the latest pictures and more as news comes to hand.
