Three days to go

There is just three days to go before the World’s Greatest Shave Cake Stall is running at the Cressy Street Kiosk, the Cake Stall will be running from 8:30am to 11am on Saturday March 19 and lots of tasty food will be on offer to purchase all in the name of a great cause.

As it currently stands on the Facebook event page, 37 people will be attending and 41 people are interested but these numbers will be no doubt much larger as the majority of the town will pass by the Kiosk on the day, readers can visit the event page and express their interest by clicking on the above link.

An estimated 3200 Australians are diagnosed with Leukaemia every year (8 per day) and so fundraising is essential to understanding and combating this devastating form of cancer.

DNS hopes that the town will be mighty hungry and buy as many of the available treats as possible in support of the World’s Greatest Shave that supports the Leukaemia Foundation.

Algae still sticking around

Recent water testing results have reported that channels to the north of Deniliquin for example Blighty have the highest concentrations of the toxic algae that is causing problems in the local area.

The concentration levels of algae drop towards where Mulwala Lake (Deniliquin’s way) is but while this appears to be good news for Deniliquin it does not mean things are on the improve as levels can fluctuate at any time.

Advice given in previous days remain unchanged so do not allow animals, yourself and fellow human beings touch the water until the all clear is given.

Deniliquin Veterinary Clinic have been exemplary in their reporting and advice giving whilst the official algae page on the Department of Primary Industries website gets updated every couple of days leaving people uncertain as to what is going on for it does not go into lengthy detail.

DNS will continue to report about the latest as it comes to hand.

March for World Water Day

March 22nd is World Water Day and this year it’s theme is ‘The power of water and jobs’, a theme that is something very special to the town.

Water is important to Deniliquin, we’ve seen the effects of the long battle against aspects of the Murray-Darling Basin Plan, we’ve seen how Blue-Green Algae has driven locals and tourists from the Edward River and we know that water provides life to the crops the town and the world needs to have flourishing.

At 11am, Speak Up is hosting an event at the Waring Gardens where residents will first gather then start to march down the river boardwalk, the aim is to demonstrate that the people want a basin plan that provides for the people, provides profit and provides for the planet.

A BBQ will be operating on the day and drinks will also be available, DNS hopes that as many townspeople as possible are able to participate and voice their concerns about the way things are going.

Swim Centre to the Rescue

The Deniliquin Swim Centre has come to the rescue of those who are missing out on a regular dip in the Edward River due to the Blue-Green Algae problem by extending opening hours by one hour with the new closing time being 7:30pm every night.

The opening and closing hours of each day for the month of March are now the following;

Monday to Friday  – 6am to 8:30am and 3pm to 7:30pm
Saturday and Sunday – 1pm to 7:30pm

The extended hour is great for the town as weather conditions are still right for many early mornings and late afternoons of swimming, DNS hopes that residents will take up the extra hour and enjoy a good afternoon and night out.

Relief ahead for Deniliquin?

Predicting the weather has been a difficult task with temperature expectations changing daily which is no doubt frustrating for residents who are seeking relief from the heat.

Weatherzone is predicting that Deniliquin’s hot weather will be easing from Sunday with temperatures running between 32 and 33 degrees from Sunday to next Wednesday which is far more comfortable than Friday’s expected top of 38 degrees.

Rain is on the cards for the entire week with odds being no less than 50% for each day but the best chance of rain appears to be on Saturday until next Tuesday with rain totals predicted to fall between 1 to 5 millimetres for each day.

Rain Chances (days expected between 1mm to 5mm)

Saturday – 90%
Sunday – 70%
Monday – 50%
Tuesday – 80%

We can only hope that the prediction of rain comes true and the farms and yards throughout Deniliquin gets the drink it deserves as residents gets the cooler weather they deserve.
