Gamers want eCards back

Deniliquin’s many Nintendo gamers are unhappy that they cannot find any local shops that sell Nintendo eCards.

Nintendo eCards are just like iTunes cards with purchasers buying them, taking them home and redeeming them via inputting the code to be able to pay for digital versions of games.

The eCards look like the ones on the image above (picture pre WiiU) and were once available at Coles but have been withdrawn sometime during 2015.

Nintendo users can still buy credit on their devices via credit card but the eCards are beneficial for those who do not have a credit card and cannot travel 45 minutes to Echuca to get one from stores that carry them.

Meanwhile past and present Deniliquin residents are doing well on Pokémon Shuffle with three having caught over 100 Pokémon,  Players still have a long way to go before claiming they have caught them all and the game is designed that gets harder to catch them and upgrade your Pokémon.

Pokémon Shuffle is free in the Nintendo eShop and can also be brought and played on devices like the iPod, iPad and iPhone for free as well.

Prices fall at Murray Goulburn

Dairy Farmers received bad news this week with Murray Goulburn saying they expect to pay farmers $4.80 per kilogram of milk solids but there is worse to come with the opening farmgate milk price being just $4.31 per kgms, a difference of 49 cents between the two.

As reported earlier this year, Murray Goulburn slashed the farmgate milk price for the remainder of the 2015/16 season to between $4.75 and $5.00 per kgms after it’s price was $5.60.

Murray Goulburn have blamed global oversupply as well very low global dairy commodity prices with reports that the amount of milk solids in inventories could make over six billion litres of milk.

There is a belief that prices will recover by six percent over the second half of the 2016/17 financial year though this increase will not put totals back to previous levels.

There is some good news with dairy producer Bega Cheese announcing an opening farmgate milk price of $5.00 per kgms which is 69 better than what Murray Goulburn is offering as it’s opening price.

Red Alert ends for the Edward

After months of waiting, the Red Alert for the Edward River has been lifted.

The Edward River has been at Red Alert since early March when the amount of Blue-Green Algae reached unhealthy levels, the River was already observed to have been really green the previous month.

Deniliquin was in the midst of a heatwave at the time and the Deniliquin Swim Centre had to extend it’s opening hours to ensure residents stayed cool until the weather cooled down to levels where a pool wasn’t needed.

The River was off limits for recreational activities which was a major blow for the town as the river is used for swimming, fishing, water skiing and other activities, now activities can now start happening again.

Unfortunately for our friends on the  Wakool River, The part of the river that goes upstream from the Wakool–Barham Road Bridge is still under Red Alert, DNS hopes this ends soon for them.

The Home Stretch

We’re into the final week of campaigning before the Federal election takes place and it will be a relief once our TV and Radio is no longer bombarded with ads from the major parties insulting each other.

Deniliquin and surrounding areas are faced with a choice, Do we keep Sussan Ley and potentially have somebody still in Cabinet or do we go for somebody from a small party who might be able to do something for the people.

The best chance for a small party is that either the LNP or ALP need the vote of Member for Farrer to enter Government or to pass bills otherwise whoever is sent to Canberra may be sitting back out of sight and hardly heard from for the next couple of years.

There is also the possibility that Sussan Ley will retain her seat despite a swing to the small parties, the Turnbull Government gets another shot and Sussan will have to work hard to try and get those who didn’t vote her this time and that means she’ll be pressing to have local views heard by the Prime Minister and in turn things may go Farrer’s way.

DNS have asked people who they would vote for and so far the LNP and the ALA are getting the lions share of votes, the ALA are considered by some to be controversial but they are keen on making the Murray-Darling Basin Plan fairer or completely abolished for the farmers.

Six parties and one Independent are vying for your vote and below are the options for those who want to make an informed decision on who they want to vote for.

Ron Pike (Liberty Alliance)
Amanda Cohn (Greens)
Paul Rossetto (Christian Democratic Party)
Brian Mills (Independent)
Sussan Ley (Liberal)
Christian Kunde (Labor)*
Trevor O’Brien (Mature Australia)

A up to date political page for Brian Mills could not be found but a search of ‘Brian Mills Farrer’ on Facebook sees he has been very active on several pages and an article on The Irrigator has proved some insight into his thoughts on the MDBP.

Whoever you vote for on Saturday, may they be the right choice for Deniliquin, for Farrer and of course our nation.

*Former ALP candidate Christian Kunde is still on the ballot paper due to legislation stating that no candidate can withdraw or be replaced after nominations close.

What should be upgraded/fixed/introduced?

Now that the Edward River Council is established (yet to have councillors), attention turns to what the Council should fix or upgrade for the good of the town and its residents now that the merger was stated to bring lots of benefits to the area.

The water fountain in the Waring Gardens is a popular choice and rightfully so as it is a very nice looking fountain that has been enjoyed by several generations of residents and visitors and so a cleaned up and restored water foundation will have benefits.

Roads around town are high up many lists when it comes to desires for them to be fixed with pot holes reported throughout town which is not good for residents cars or their wallets, Residents are already unhappy with the rates to service standard ratio and with the Council merger promised to be a financial and infrastructure windfall, results are expected sooner rather than later.

Footpaths are also on many wish lists due to the fact that many of the streets either have footpaths in bad condition, some streets only have one side of the street with a footpath and a large number of streets have none at all.

The lack of footpaths is considered a major reason why people take a chance and walk on the roads at night because they don’t want to trip over poor maintained footpaths or tree roots etc when taking to nature strips and hurting themselves in the process.

An upgrade of street lights or the construction of additional lights is also on the wish list because it is hard for a person to see where a person is walking at night and with drivers reporting near misses, an elimination of the possibility of a serious accident is always a good thing.

The resurrection of Rail transport over Air travel is another wish, the building of a new KFC, the resurrection of the Community Centre and the introduction of major shops that have no other businesses in the same shop genre are some of the other desires for the

The above is just some of the items that would make our wish list, If you could make your own, what would you have on it? Comments are always welcome as it provokes thought, discovery and in many cases a well informed opinion for all.
