Moderate Flooding in effect

The Edward River has risen to moderate flooding levels at a speed that has taken many by surprise.

After a rise of 42cm between 9am yesterday and 9am today, A similar rise of 39cm (9am to 7pm) happened in just ten hours.

The September 30 river peak of 7.06m was surpassed early this afternoon and rises continued on at great speed to reach the moderate flooding level of 7.20m at 7pm this evening.

At this time of writing, the Edward River is rising 4-5cm per hour and if it holds at that pace the 8.4m prediction could be reached in around 26 hours.

We once again remind readers of what is to come between now and the 8.40m prediction;

At 7.16m the Edward River Oval will be flooded
At 7.32m outside the levee of the Riverside Caravan Park will be inundated
At 7.91m water crosses Chippenham Park Road
At 7.94m Memorial Drive will be inundated
At 8.50m McLean Beach Holiday Park levee is overtopped* (closer to 8.2m before sandbagging)

McLean Beach Holiday Park is expected to be closed by Wednesday as the water level forces the closure of the entry road, removal of property and moving of vans etc is already underway.

NSW SES are holding a public meeting tomorrow night to discuss preparedness and answer questions relating to the likely impact of flooding.

The meeting will be taking place at 7pm down at the Deniliquin RSL Club’s Auditorium.

DNS and Deniliquin History in Photos are both following developments and will continue to report as developments as fold as quickly as possible.

Herd2homes calls for help

Herd2homes Dog Rescue have urgently put out a call for donations as medical emergencies threaten the lives of several pups.

What began as a fundraiser for one pup in hospital with Parvo (Parvovirus) has quickly turned into a total of four pups in hospital with the potentially fatal disease that is know to strike pups younger than six months old.

As many will read in the link above, Parvo is not pleasant and what it does would not be wished upon any human or animal alike.

A total is $2000 is aimed for and the good news about the fundraiser is that it accepts both Credit Card and PayPal which makes it very easy for people to donate.

There is also another way to donate and that is by texting CLANCY to 0400 770 530 and $5 is added to your phone bill or subtracted from phone credit for the fundraiser.

So far 12 people have contributed a total of $420 to the fundraiser and it is hoped the momentum keeps going in the coming days.

It has been a busy time for the dog rescue group as they’ve taken in 34 new ‘poochies’ since last Tuesday whilst several dogs have found new homes.

Donations can be made by clicking here followed by clicking ‘Give Now’ and following instructions, donations can be made private.

DNS will continue to keep readers updated as news comes to hand.

EDIT: It was sadly reported today that Clancy lost his battle against Parvo.

2016 Ute Muster on YouTube

It’s been a week since the Ute Muster truly opened and so in honour of that we take a little look online to see what YouTube has on offer.

From Keith Urban to Nudity, YouTube has it all on offer and those who avoided all the mud can sit back from the comfort of home and work place and watch how the thousands of people dealt with the mud last week.

We’ll skip the guy slipping and sliding in the mud but the rest is good, muddy entertainment and it is all below for readers to sift though and enjoy.

Moderate flooding this time?

The Edward is currently going down but it is expected to change its trend and start going back up to a height of 8.50m around October 17 (moderate flooding level starts at 7.20m).

Residents are thinking a mixture of thoughts as there is so much uncertainty due to the fact October 17 is 11 days away and nothing is a certainty for levels could turn out to be higher or lower when the rises finally arrive.

As it stands right now, The Edward will have to gain 2.09m in 11 days which means around 20cm gains per day if the trend stops right now and starts right now.

Damien Rhook at Deniliquin History in Photos has been watching events unfold closely and has told the 4,000+ likers on the page what will happen if the 8.5m prediction is reached and we have the potential situations for you below.

At 7.16m the Edward River Oval will be flooded
At 7.32m outside the levee of the Riverside Caravan Park will be inundated
At 7.91m water crosses Chippenham Park Road
At 7.94m Memorial Drive will be inundated
At 8.50m McLean Beach Holiday Park levee is overtopped

It has been reported that the 8.5m figure given in a 2014 report for McLean Beach Holiday Park is actually closer to a figure between 8m and 8.2m, we do know for a fact that the entrance road to the park will be closed as soon as it reaches 8m.

Those residing at the park are urged to do the following protect their property and selves from any risk

– Make sure that removable items are taken from your site
– Vans are temporarily moved from the park
– Edward River Council has higher ground that your vans can be stored at.

The parks FB page should be checked regularly for updates and important information such as height levels and any evacuation plans.

Outside of Deniliquin the following is expected between now and the end of October;

Corowa – Moderate Flooding (tonight)
Yarrawonga – Major Flooding (Tomorrow)
Tocumwal – Major Flooding (Sunday)
Stevens Weir – Moderate Flooding (October 18)
Moulamein – Moderate Flooding (End of October)

The following are preliminary forecasts

Echuca – Moama – Minor Flooding (October 16)
Torrumbarry Weir – Moderate Flooding (October 19)
Barham – Moderate Flooding (October 22)
Wakool Junction – Minor to Moderate Flooding (Up to November)

We will continue to report on the situations as news comes to hand.

Fallen tree causes chaos

Travel between Deniliquin and Echuca was cut off for several hours yesterday as a tree fell across the bridge that connects Echuca to Moama.

Thankfully plans are being worked on to build a second bridge which will ease congestion and not paralyse traffic on the border should an accident or a freak of nature occurs.

Readers can check out the latest report from VicRoads here and it looks like it is good news for everyone if they decide to carry it out after all it taken Queensland several decades to build a promised train route for it’s residents.

Yesterdays events have made us wonder what would happen if something happens to Deniliquin’s bridge? We would have chaos as one half of the town has no access to the other.

If there was a second bridge, where would it go? Can’t put it next to the current bridge because places like Peppin Heritage Centre, Edward River Oval and The Buncha are too close and there isn’t a whole lot of space for hundreds of metres if not kilometres.

One additional problem is that the levee system may have to be partially dismantled and redesigned to accomodate a bridge too.

Lots of food for thought readers, what are your thoughts?
