Debate on the fate of the Waring Gardens Aviary continues as everyone weighs up the pros and cons of keeping the long standing and much loved enclosure and their animals in the Waring Gardens.

Many locals are keen on keeping the enclosure and the animals and want the upgrades to take place, 753 people have so far signed a petition that calls on the Peacocks to stay.

Many others say the Peacocks stay should come to an end with several citing costs as a factor which includes $30,000 for a satisfactory enclosure, $10,000 for staff and food per year, $8580 for enrolling two people into a course to get the right certification and there is extras for educational material plus zoo working.

Part of the $30,000 goes into an industrial kitchen and freezer to make sure the animals get the very best which may seem extravagant but rules are rules.

Locals have to think about some of the following and more;

– Are the Peacocks worth the minimum $50,000?
– Do the Peacocks have any economic value to the town?
– Can the Peacocks Enclosure be moved to anywhere else in the Gardens?
– Can they be re-homed permanently anywhere else in Deniliquin?
– Is there something else worth spending the $10,000+ a year on?
– Does the town really want to lose another icon?

For the next 28 days there is a section on ‘Our Say‘ dedicated to the Waring Gardens Avery question and it lays out all the pros and cons and there is a section where you can login using your Facebook or Google details and submit a question if you have any.

For and against feedback is welcomed by the ERC and it can be done in four ways.

The first is by emailing the General Manager at council@edwardriver.nsw.gov.au and in the subject line put in ‘Waring Gardens Aviary’.

Locals are invited bring their Restored vehicles, old model Trucks, Classic’s Cars, Hot Rods, Sports Cars, Utes, Panel Vans, Toranas and old model Fords to Kyabram on February 25th for the ‘Legends of the Mountain‘ event held at the Kyabram Showgrounds.

Those who just want to check out all the action can do so as well so nobody misses out on the opportunity to see some fantastic cars.

But wait there’s more, people get the chance to meet some “Legends of the Mountain” and they are none other than three time Bathurst 1000 winner Dick Johnson and two time Bathurst winner John Bowe.

Joining them at the event is Joe Felice (Holden Manager of Motor Sport) and Lewis Brock.

The event will also have House of Muscle and Peter Brock Merchandise Trucks there too so you can buy as much super car stuff as you like and don’t forget to bring something to be signed as well.

The action kicks off at 8am and ends at 2pm and entry to the event is a gold coin donation which is paid upon entry and if you enter a display car the cost is $10.

For those who wanting to make a weekend of it in Kyabram, there is an event on the Saturday with the Bathurst legends night on the 24th of February down at the Kyabram Bocce Bowls Club from 6:30pm, it is hosted by Glen Ridge and tickets are $85 and you can call 040 838 1028 or 0418 379 127.

Edward River Oval is set to host the airing of four movies in the first week of January.

Big Hero 6 kicks off proceedings by being screened on January 4.

Red Dog will screen next on January 5.

The Lego Batman Movie will screen on January 6.

Step Brothers will be the last movie to be shown over the four days and that is on January 7.

To book your tickets, click on each of the movie titles to be taken to the booking page, if you book the tickets are free except for VIP section which is $15 plus fees which takes it to $16.37 but you do get a Bean Bed with VIP.

If you buy a ticket at the gate it is $10 for Adults, $5 for Children and VIP is $20.

Gates open from 6pm and the movie gets underway at nightfall.

Food Trucks, A Bar and Entertainment are on offer, patrons can bring in blankets and chairs but no food or drink is allowed to be taken in.

It may be 15 days to go until Christmas 2017 but the people of Deniliquin are already in a festive mood thanks to the The Edward River Christmas Fair and Carols by Candlelight that was held today at Waring Gardens.

Temperatures were in the low 30’s during the Christmas Fair but it did not drive away fair goers who attended the event throughout the afternoon.

Those who went to the Fair (aka Mayor’s Christmas Party) got to enjoy such things as Ice Cream and pictures with Santa.

Carols by Candlelight was underway after the Fair and all the Christmas standards were sung no doubt getting everyone fine tuned for what will come in just over two weeks time.

The warm weather stayed throughout the Carols with the temperature reading 23.7 degrees at 9pm and the wind generally behaved itself with the highest gust being 30km/h at 6:20pm and the lowest was 9km/h at 9pm.

As readers can see in the pictures by Daniel Clark, A fireworks display ended the night and it was well received by those who saw the action although some locals did have concerns about the safety of nearby pets and animals including the Peacocks and other animals in the Gardens itself.

While some probably wish the Carols were on a week or even two weeks from today to be closer to Christmas itself, the amount of positive responses from residents on social media will make it  interesting to see if they pair the Christmas Fair and Carols by Candlelight again next year.
