Is A Merger Worth It?

A hot topic at the moment is the proposed merger between Conargo Shire and Deniliquin Council.

A merger would result in a $19 million dollar benefit over 20 years assuming all is going wonderful in those 20 years, $10 million dollars from the Stronger Communities Fund for community infrastructure projects and the population will go up to become 9,000 people (8,972 on old figures).

As it currently stands, Deniliquin Council runs 143 square kilometres of land, Conargo Shire is 8,738 square kilometres, a merger will make the total area 8,881 square kilometres.

Both have offices in Deniliquin but Deniliquin is not part of the Shire which can be confusing to people.

In 2014, Deniliquin was recorded having 7,437 people as residents whilst 1,535 people lived in Conargo Shire, Deniliquin is expected to have a small population decline in coming years.

Deniliquin’s operating revenue is more than double of Conargo Shire’s (16.9m vs 8.1m) with merger predictions expecting a total of 28.1 million by 2019-20.

Deniliquin made a $100,000 operating result profit compared to Conargo’s $800,000 loss in 2013-14 but a merger is expected to bring a $900,000 increase to operating result profit.

Deniliquin also has a larger asset base worth 129.7 million compared to Conargo Shire’s 100.9 million.

One point that may be of interest is Deniliquin’s Infrastructure backlog is sitting at 22% and a merger will lower that by 9% to be 13% which would please Deniliquin residents but residents will have to remember Conargo has a 0% backlog and infrastructure will no doubt be spread around the new area.

Of course there is other benefits and changes in the proposal (see link at the bottom of page) but Deniliquin residents have to decide if they like being in the small confines of Deniliquin Council or be part of something bigger land wise with a new Council?

One last thing to consider is the fact that Council mergers have not been popular in Australia, Victorians did not like the Jeff Kennett ordered mergers in the 1990’s and in the late 2000’s Queensland’s mergers were met with community anger and several Councils managed to de-amalgamate after just four years.

The Blue-Green Problem

For some time now, the Edward River has been looking a little Green and until today (26/2/16) it was not considered to be officially a problem.

Deniliquin residents however knew that the green in the water wasn’t an attempt by Deniliquin Council to start St Patrick’s Day several weeks early and when activities on the river was cancelled by Thursday things started getting serious.

Despite the cancellations and the green look of the river, an alert wasn’t issued until today which confused many residents for cancellations + radio alerts = problem.

Visit Deni had to change their information today after being told yesterday by Council that there was no warnings in place and all plans would be unaffected, yesterday’s post was removed and replaced with the alert.

Even if it wasn’t Blue-Green Algae, Algae of any form is not very pleasant and warnings of Algae being in the Edward River should of been issued to give the people a chance to assess their options for midweek or weekend fun on the water.

The last thing anyone needs is to not hear any warnings, get into some green water (similar to what is in the image below) and then find themselves in a lot of medical trouble.

Deniliquin Boat Club

Having the Edward River going through Deniliquin allows the town to have a thriving boating and fishing scene without the hassle of traveling far to get in some good quality time on the water.

The Deniliquin Boat Club has on Facebook an excellent page that is regularly updated with news and information, pictures, videos and everything else you need to know to ensure that you get the best knowledge and experience all in the one place.

412 people like the Deniliquin Boat Club page and the club has a 4.9 out of a possible 5 star rating from nine reviews making the page an important place to go if you want to know what and when something is going on.

The Evolution of Deniliquin

It has been said throughout time that Deniliquin is a place that never changes yet upon closer inspection, it has changed quite a lot.

Deniliquin History In Photos‘ and ‘Deniliquin & District Historical Society‘ on Facebook have both since their opening released hundreds of photos showing how much the town has changed throughout time and while change is considered good there is a thought that perhaps too much change has been made.

We’ve seen photos of the Town Hall being the Regent Theatre, We’ve seen photos of buildings being beside Town Hall where nice grass and trees now reside and so much more.

The amount of buildings lost over the decades is staggering and some like the former Community Centre sit empty and slowly being battered to death by the ravages of time and vandalism.

Perhaps the recent securing of the future of the Federal Hotel will begin a time where historical buildings will be kept secure with a firm grip by Council and the people of Deniliquin, Progress is good but history and great architecture should be preserved in great numbers and not left to texts and photographs.

Inspiration found on running track

Deniliquin Little Athletics recently sent some of it’s participants to the regionals in Lake Illawarra and the team by all reports were all excellent representatives of the club and town.

Jaycob Clarke was running the 800 metre race in the U/14 category and the field was very strong in terms of pace but this did not deter him even as the rest of the field got further away from him as the race progressed.

But the story does not end there for after the rest of the field finished their race, they turned around and joined Jaycob as he completed the rest of the eight hundred metres.

These moments were captured on video and has now been shared with the rest of the world, there is plenty a viewer can take from the footage, there’s the sportsmanship and kindness of Jaycob’s fellow runners, there’s the fact those runners clubs and parents gave them great values and then there’s Jaycob who shown that no matter what the result is going to be just keep going to the end.

Participating in a regional is an honour but this regional is no doubt now considered a life changer and one that is etched into history for all the right reasons and more.
