Junee asks for help

Junee, NSW residents are calling on residents of towns similar to theirs to support their petition calling on ANZ to keep the Junee branch open.

Junee’s ANZ branch is the most profitable branch in the region but it is getting the axe because of it’s closeness to Wagga which is unbelievable when the ‘closeness’ is 30km.

Deniliquin has recently had some experience in traveling far for service as the closure last week of HCF forces residents to go several hundred kilometres for assistance instead of just going down to the branch on Cressy Street and getting it there.

The closure of the ANZ branch would be the second bank blow to Junee as Westpac closed their branch in town a year ago, losing both Westpac and ANZ would be a massive blow for the town of Junee.

Many readers of DNS have expressed their disappointment of Businesses, Corporations and Government Services pulling out of Deniliquin in recent times and there is no doubt that readers believe that all country areas deserve the same services the densely populated areas do.

We’ve been lucky that Deniliquin has avoided what is happening to Junee in terms of bank branch closures but there’s no guarantee we’d outrun such bad news forever and if it does happen to us we would love having other towns residents in our corner.

To support Junee in their quest to keep their branch open, sign the petition by clicking this link.

Edward River peaks at 4.29m

Deniliquin residents can relax now as the Edward River peaked today with the water level getting up to 4.29m.

The 4.29m level is 31 centimetres below what is considered to be minor flooding for the area (4.6m and up) although some low lying areas near town are a little wetter than usual.

Stevens Weir is also expected to have it’s water level peak below minor flood level whilst Barham is recording a level that is at minor flood levels.

ABC Riverina has proven to be a great source of information when it comes to warnings and BOM’s river height data is valuable to those needing to know how high the river is.

DNS will advise readers if anything changes in the future.

Flood warning for the Edward

A flood warning has been issued for the Edward River as the Murray River plus its anabranches and tributaries are experiencing rising water levels.

According to the report at 9am this morning, the Edward River at Deniliquin has a height of 3.81m and the level
is expected to exceed what is classified as minor flooding this coming weekend.

For it to be classed as minor flooding, The Edward must be 4.6m or higher and according to current forecasts, The Edward is expected to reach 4.8m by next Monday.

Barham is predicted to have water levels in the moderate flood range (5.8m) around next Wednesday and Stevens Weir is expected to have it’s water level up to 5.5m around next Monday.

ABC Riverina has a page with all the information and they will be updating it at 9am tomorrow.

DNS will keep readers updated as the news comes in.
