Are school zones becoming dangerous?

There is concern around town that school drop zones are becoming a little dangerous as there are reports of drivers not following speed limits or looking to see if kids/teens are crossing the road near schools.

Every school day, there is hundreds of kids and/or their parents in the areas before and after school and rules must be obeyed to ensure that those using the footpaths and roads get to and from school safely.

All drivers should take their time through the school zones to ensure a safe trip for all, students should also make sure to look both ways constantly to avoid walking into the path of any vehicles as it is easy to get distracted by music, inner thoughts or conversation.

Together everyone can make the school zones a safe place to travel through when school is about to be in session or just finished for the day/week.

Flashback to the Art Expo

On the morning of June 3 2015, activity in the Student Amenities room at Deniliquin TAFE was at a fast pace as the Cert 1 Access to Work and Training class were putting the final touches to their Art Expo.

It had taken the class weeks of effort to get to this part as there was so much to consider and work on from entry prices, who was eligible to enter, poster designs to put up in stores, types of art, who will monitor the expo throughout the day and of course having time to make some art themselves.

The decision to let in entries from across the campus and Finley ensured that visitors would get to see a fine array of artwork from clay pieces including ones of John Howard, Julia Gillard and even a Sega Mega Drive II to drawings, collages, paintings and more.

The Art Expo opened and the class’s efforts were slowly rewarded with a steady stream of visitors which was a relief for the class as a lack of visitors would of been a bitter disappointment after all the effort putting his signs in most of the shops throughout town.

At the end of the day, over seventy dollars was raised and the ladies of the class even got into the Pastoral Times which was alright by the men of the class for they disliked the idea of being in the paper for shyness reasons even if they were roped into photos.

The money raised from the Art Expo was spent on buying two pool cues to replace the ones that were battered from years of use and abuse, the old pool cues were so battered one was heavily taped up and the front was at a angle and so the purchase of two new ones was a good idea.

The remainder of the money was spent building up the garden beds with mulch and various plants outside K Block which were a love of the Cert 1’s through 2015 and was quite successful as well.

A plaque and Bluetooth speakers were also looked with several designs of the plaque being drawn up and costs investigated but the idea went no further.

Not all the pieces from the expo were disposed of after the event, several of the clay pieces and some pictures were saved as a reminder of the time, effort and fun that went into the Expo.

DNS hopes you the reader enjoyed this flashback and we look forward to presenting more flashbacks in the future.

Rovers Talk (2/6/16)

A Grade has a bye this week, no joke readers they have to put their feet up for the third time in the last four weeks and this exposes the problem A Grade competition has because they’ve got eight teams compared to the rest with nine yet they have the bye in place just like all the other competitions plus another bye for some reason.

So one team gets the round bye like all the other competitions do and another gets a bye because they got nobody to play which can get really confusing to people.

A Grade has had or will have byes on Rounds 7, 9, 11, 16 (all Rovers teams for R16) and 18 which is not ideal for the team because the team has already had a month of stop and starts and will have to wait until Rounds 12 to 16 to get back into a rhythm of consecutive games.

B Grade who is sitting on top of the ladder with a 7-0 record is taking on Berrigan’s B Grade side who is sixth on the ladder with 3-4 record from their seven games this season, Berrigan needs a win to keep up with Tocumwal who have the bye this weekend.

C Grade are sitting on top of the C Grade ladder with a 6-1 record and their opponents are sitting in fourth position with an also impressive 5-2 record, C Grade has a crowded top part of the ladder with three sides just a win off top spot.

C Reserve are sitting second on the C Reserve ladder with a 6-1 record and they’re opponents are sitting fourth with a 4-2-1 record which is not a bad record at this part of the season so this match should be interesting.

Under 17’s are sitting on top of their ladder with a 7-0 record and they take on a Berrigan side that is sitting on the bottom of the ladder with a 0-7 record but don’t count Berrigan out as bottom sides are always desperate and determined to land their first win.

Under 15’s are sitting in sixth spot on the competition ladder and they take on a Berrigan side that are sitting in eighth spot with a  1-6 record, a win will keep the Rovers no further than two games out of the top 5.

Under 13’s are sitting first on their competition ladder with a 7-0 record and they take on a Berrigan side that is sitting seventh with a 2-5 record.

Football

Rovers Seniors are 5-2 and are sitting in third spot on the ladder thanks to their thrilling /nerve racking comeback win last week against Tocumwal at Memorial Park.

Berrigan are sitting in second spot with a 6-1 record making this a great clash, a win to the Rovers will make them level with Berrigan on points and a 7% gain will give them second spot.

Rovers Reserves are 7-0, on top of the ladder and are a win ahead of Picola United whilst Berrigan are sitting in 7th spot with a 2-5 record and desperately seeking a win so the Reserves must be wary of that.

Under 17’s will be in a clash of the seasons titans so far with both the Rovers and Berrigan sides undefeated with 7-0 records, Rovers have scored more, Berrigan have been scored on less and the Rovers are on top of the ladder due to a higher percentage.

Under 14’s are sitting in fourth spot ahead of Blighty on percentage and are taking on a Berrigan side that is on the bottom of the ladder with no wins from seven games but don’t count Berrigan out because bottom sides will always get their all against finals contending sides.

Thoughts

It’s going to be an interesting round of matches in both Football and Netball as in some competitions the sides are right beside each other on the ladder.

Don’t forget after the game is the Mustaches & Mascara Masquerade Ball which starts at 7pm.
Smokoshak has tickets available and they are also available at Rovers training (Today) for $40 or turn up on the night and pay $50 for entry at the door, dress code is dress to impress so make sure you turn up in your finest of clothes.

Further details on the ball can be found on the event page.

Go Rovers!

A recap of May

May is coming to an end and it’s been an action packed month for Deniliquin and so DNS has put together a recap of a small part of the action.

Markets were well attended this month which is always a good thing for the community as sales help local people and organizations out.

The Deniliquin Fine Wine & Food Festival was a well received event on the 28th despite nature trying it’s best to wash it out and hopefully the Festival will continue on for more years to come.

Milk from local producers were snapped up by locals, Milk is good for everyone so keep on buying Milk at any price you can, for those who seek to really help dairy farmers out buy milk directly from them to ensure the farmer gets every cent of the profit.

Deni’s Diner is now operating during most of the day hours at Green Pepper Pizza Café and that means locals now have a bigger choice of food to order around town.

Blue-Green Algae is still a problem with still no sign of Red Alert being changed to Yellow or Green Alert for the Edward River.

Deniliquin Council officially got merged with Conargo Shire to form the Edward River Council and DNS is yet to meet a person who believes the merger is a wonderful thing for the area.

Discontent over rates piqued during the month with many locals still unhappy about the rates and it is hoped the new Council Administrator does something about it.

Football and Netball competitions were well underway in May and the month ended with a thrilling A Grade draw in between the Rovers and Tocumwal in Netball and then fans witnessed a thrilling two point win to the Rovers Seniors in Football against Tocumwal.

We saw a record amount of rain fall this month with 99.8mm of the precious liquid falling throughout the month, it is reported that the 99.8mm of rain is the highest May rainfall in 60 years.

Morning temperatures were a couple of degrees above average which meant there was a little bit more motivation to get out of bed to get to work, school or TAFE.

Lastly, It was reported today that the first Deniliquin and District Transport Industry Wall of Fame is happening in September this year and there is no doubt there is many people who are worthy of being among the first honoured as the transport industry is a vital part of society for without transport there would not be the ability to shift goods and services around the country.

That’s a wrap of May, there was lots more on through the month and we can only hope that June will be just as big a month for Deniliquin as May was.

Algae remains Steady

The Algae situation for the Edward River has not changed with the Algae alert map still showing red where we are in the world.

The new report that came out today reports that Gulpa Creek and the Edward River (Mathoura to Old Morago) is still reporting that it’s levels of Algae are steady.

There is some good news for those on the Wakool River as the report for Wakool River from the Wakool-Barham Road to Kyalite is now reading steady, this is good because for some time now levels were reported to be increasing in parts.

With Blue-Green Algae known to grown from heat being trapped in the water and a lack of river movement, it is hoped that the approaching Winter will be what the area needs to get rid of the Algae.

After the Algae goes away, A solution to prevent it from happening again must be found before the weather heats back up in a few months time and potentially causing another months long period of no river activity.

As mentioned previously, one of those solutions is a redesign or abolishment of the Murray-Darling Basin Plan as it is believed to be the cause of many problems from a lack of available water, lack of good water flow and Blue-Green Algae outbreaks to name a few issues.
