Junee asks for help

Junee, NSW residents are calling on residents of towns similar to theirs to support their petition calling on ANZ to keep the Junee branch open.

Junee’s ANZ branch is the most profitable branch in the region but it is getting the axe because of it’s closeness to Wagga which is unbelievable when the ‘closeness’ is 30km.

Deniliquin has recently had some experience in traveling far for service as the closure last week of HCF forces residents to go several hundred kilometres for assistance instead of just going down to the branch on Cressy Street and getting it there.

The closure of the ANZ branch would be the second bank blow to Junee as Westpac closed their branch in town a year ago, losing both Westpac and ANZ would be a massive blow for the town of Junee.

Many readers of DNS have expressed their disappointment of Businesses, Corporations and Government Services pulling out of Deniliquin in recent times and there is no doubt that readers believe that all country areas deserve the same services the densely populated areas do.

We’ve been lucky that Deniliquin has avoided what is happening to Junee in terms of bank branch closures but there’s no guarantee we’d outrun such bad news forever and if it does happen to us we would love having other towns residents in our corner.

To support Junee in their quest to keep their branch open, sign the petition by clicking this link.

Edward River peaks at 4.29m

Deniliquin residents can relax now as the Edward River peaked today with the water level getting up to 4.29m.

The 4.29m level is 31 centimetres below what is considered to be minor flooding for the area (4.6m and up) although some low lying areas near town are a little wetter than usual.

Stevens Weir is also expected to have it’s water level peak below minor flood level whilst Barham is recording a level that is at minor flood levels.

ABC Riverina has proven to be a great source of information when it comes to warnings and BOM’s river height data is valuable to those needing to know how high the river is.

DNS will advise readers if anything changes in the future.

Rovers Talk (14/8/16)

Qualifying and Elimination Finals got underway this weekend in both Football and Netball competition and we have the results from those matches for you.

Netball

A Grade had to overrun Blighty to win by the narrowest of margins with the final scores reading 39 to 38, The win sets up a clash against Tocumwal in the Semi Finals.

C Grade lost their Qualifying Final game to Strathmerton 36 to 35 but thankfully their journey isn’t over yet with the Semi Finals to come.

C Reserve defeated Picola United 42 to 37 to advance through to the Semi Finals and a shot at jumping straight to the Grand Final.

Football.

The Seniors fought hard today in their match but were eliminated from the finals by Blighty 14.17 – 101 to 13.8 -86.

Whilst the team will be undoubtedly disappointed in their loss, The side should take pride in the fact they came from last in 2015 to reach the finals this year and such a turnaround doesn’t happen often in sport.

The Reserves won their Qualifying Final on Saturday by defeating Blighty by 75 points.

The Rovers kicked 14.9 – 93 to 2.6 – 18 to advance to the next stage of their finals journey.

B. MacDonald kicked 6 goals and B. Todd kicked 2 goals whilst A. Goodear, B. Ezard, L. Fleming, K. Shephard, A. Rourke and M. Atley all kicked a goal apiece in the win.

The Fourths were defeated in their Qualifying Final against Strathmerton, the final scores were Rovers 11.7 – 73 to 5.1 – 31.

This loss while major does not mean the end of the premiership dream as the Rovers earned the double chance at making the big one.

T. Chandler and B. East kicked 2 goals apiece and J. Woodcock kicked a goal in the loss.

Thoughts

The finals journey for the Seniors ended today but for nine other Rovers sides the journey continues on for at least another week.

The stakes will be higher and will continue to get higher as the weeks go by but the Rovers are an organization that knows the stakes well and they will be ready to put on a show for all to see.

Rovers Talk will be back next Thursday with all the regular Thursday information as the Semi Finals comes to Memorial Park and other locations.

Rovers Talk (11/8/16)

The Finals are here and this edition of Rovers Talk is a little different because only some of the ten Rovers teams are playing this weekend and playing locations are different too.

All Netball sides are playing in Tocumwal on Saturday whilst the Football sides are playing in a variety of locations on both Saturday and Sunday.

Football

Rovers Seniors are taking on Blighty this Sunday in their Elimination Final clash at Mathoura.

Last time they met: Seniors lost their Round 11 match against Blighty 9.11 -65 to 6.5 – 41.

Rovers Reserves are taking on Blighty in their Qualifying Final at Tocumwal this Saturday.

Last time they met: Reserves won their Round 11 match against Blighty 6.6 – 42 to 4.1 – 25.

The Fourths are taking on Strathmerton in their Qualifying Final match at Tocumwal this Saturday.

Last time they met: The Fourths lost their Round 14 match against Strathmerton 8.8 – 56 to 0.2 -2.

Thoughts

Composure is important this finals series as many matches throughout the regular season were tight ones and the team that stays the calmest under pressure will get through when the pressure is at it’s highest.

Also important is remembering that a team is like a machine, Every player is important and is needed otherwise the machine stops working, Individual brilliance is nice to see from a spectators point of view but a team that has it’s players playing their roles as planned usually wins.

Rovers Talk will be back on Sunday afternoon with all the results for you to read and hopefully enjoy.
