The return of Tennis to the North?

Deniliquin North Tennis Courts are asking the town who wants to see their courts back in action and who would play there during the week.

It’s been a rough couple of years for the courts but a dedicated group are helping the courts and building fight the ravages of time until it is used by the masses once more.

Having the courts operational again would be a great thing for Deniliquin as players have a choice of where to play and plus it has great fitness and social value and those two are really important values.

Parked car hits are rising

Reports of parked cars being hit in town have risen in recent weeks and it is making locals really unhappy as you’ve probably seen in thumbs up/thumbs down groups recently.

Residents are urging each other to please take great care when moving through car parks, Drivers are also urged to please not drive off if they do hit another vehicle.

Social media reports are saying that drivers who have hit cars have made little or no attempt to make amends (swapping details or note of apology) which serves to anger people more.

Several near misses have also been reported as cars are leaving the supermarkets and other locations.

So please be careful out there drivers around Deniliquin and do the right thing if an accident does occur.

ERC looks for brand and logo

The Edward River Council is looking for a new brand and logo design.

There are several choices to choose from and while none have to do with a Cockatoo like the now gone Deniliquin Council had there is a Merino, The Sun, The River, Agriculture, and Environment to consider.

Voters have until 5pm Monday August 28 to pick the one that they want and to do that visit the ERC website and choose what you like or dislike from the ones you see in the pictures below.

The winning choice will be unveiled in October and will be visible for all to see over the next 12 months from then.

It will be interesting to see if the new name and colours will also mean lower rates, smoother roads, cleaner streets and more in the future to make this truly a new era for the area.

Hope for Junee?

Last week, We wrote about Junee’s battle to keep their ANZ branch open and while it may of seemed strange reporting on what is going on over there, The way they are fighting can be handy in any battle Deniliquin may face in the future.

The petition on change.org has been signed by nearly 500 people and along with a paper petition recording large numbers of signatures, The ANZ have responded by sending representatives to Junee for a meeting tomorrow (August 23) with council, campaign organizers and Junee Businesses and Trades at the Council.

If Junee is successful and the ANZ reverses their stance on closing the branch, The win would inspire country towns to really dig in when it comes to trying to keep soon to depart businesses and services in their areas when previously a business or service’s word of closure meant that it’s unstoppable and had to be accepted.

DNS will continue to follow the battle as events unfold and word comes to hand.

The rain returns

Over 10mm of rain fell around Deniliquin today pushing the monthly total past the long term August average of 32.1mm.

The current Weatherzone record for August is 66.2mm which was recorded in 2010 and there’s a chance that record will fall with 5 to 10 millimetres predicted for Tuesday and 10 to 20 millimetres of rain predicted for Wednesday and anything can happen in the last week of the month.

Today’s 20+ kilometre per hour winds will return tomorrow before dropping below 20kph on Sunday with next Tuesday predicted to be the calmest.

The above is not what many people were hoping for in a year that has seen above average rainfall, many are hoping that rainfall has not hit catchment areas forcing the Murray and it’s anabranches to rise in height like they did last week.

DNS will continue to report on the weather situation as further news comes to hand.
