Learning about the Railway

The rubbish, long grass and weeds situation outside Deniliquin Plaza has led to locals wondering who actually owns the strip of land that goes from the rail line to the back of the shops so that the owners could be contacted and the place hopefully gets tidied up.

At first it was believed that GrainCorp own the land but their boundary only goes to the silo side of the rail line.

The next idea was V/Line considering the Border Railways Act 1922 places the line under Victorian control.

Then Twitter user @MelbPTUser saw our Tweet to V/Line and answered with the following information.

“V/line actually don’t own the regional rail network in Vic, instead they lease it from VicTrack who own the Victorian rail network and associated infrastructure, this includes the standard gauge tracks which are leased to the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) who operates all the major interstate standard gauge routes

But Deniliquin line being broad gauge wouldn’t fall under ARTC’s control. Its an interesting one!”

So with this information, posts have been sent to VicTrack on Facebook and Twitter asking them if they own the line and showing them the long grass and weeds in case they do own it or know who does and passes the information along.

One last piece of interest was that we found a site called nswrail.net and it has two pictures from the 1980s and a couple from the early 2000’s when the station was still standing as well as the goods shed.

@MelbPTUser is right, it is an interesting one.

Rovers Talk (Oct 27)

As readers know, Memorial Park has been hit by the recent flooding and pictures taken by various sources have revealed that the netball courts and most of the oval was covered by water, other pictures were showing that the stand appears to have been spared by the waters.

Whilst the river is going down around 20cm a day at this time of writing, it will be some time before a good look can be taken and we have no doubt the Rovers FB page will give a detailed report on how everything is.

Wednesday, November the 30th will be the Rovers AGM, the AGM will be held down at the Clubrooms at 7pm.

Anyone who wants to nominate for board positions must have their nomination in to the club secretary, Vicki Brunker by no later than November 25 and those nominations can be sent to PO Box 25, Deniliquin.

There is a brief online survey for people to fill out in regards to the clubs social nights, the aim of the survey is to see what people attend and like in order to make the nights as enjoyable as possible.

Josh Flight and John Allit have been named in the Murray Bushrangers pre-season training squad with the aim of making it into the team for the 2017 TAC Cup.

The Murray Bushrangers have won two Premierships since being founded in 1993 and have seen dozens of players make it into the AFL and achieving Premiership success and so we know the boys are training with a great club.

McDonalds Deniliquin and Intersports Bennett’s have donated a total of 30 footballs to the Rovers, these footballs will be in handy for the 2017 season.

Lastly, the Rovers Facebook page is currently sitting on 1,481 likes leaving just 19 more to the 1,500 like milestone.

We’ll be back with a new edition of Rovers Talk real soon as the countdown to season 2017 continues.

Beyond the Fence

The other day DNS discussed the rubbish situation along the fence of Deniliquin Plaza and our man of many talents Dan Clark remarked about the tall grass that is just past the fence.

A series of events ensured that we were unable to quickly get back to the fence to show what lay beyond it and document what was seen.

Fortunately for us and the town, James Barling saw what was beyond the fence, taken pictures and sent them to us and we are very honoured by the fact that we were considered to put words to the pictures.

As you can see in three pictures, the amount and heights of the grass and weeds is astounding and there is no doubt that Edward River Council must now resolve the issue of the overgrown grass and weeds as quickly as possible.

A fourth picture shows the rubbish along the fence, this picture bolsters the photos taken by Dan when it comes to seeing the rubbish along the fence, this problem should also be taken care of by Council whether by action or enforcing an order.

We live in a town that is lauded for the Ute Muster, Cruising Nationals, Fishing Classic, Festivals, Its great establishments and more but we are fast becoming in danger of being a town that does not take care of its  environment.

A reminder to readers to check out our petition and sign it if you really believe that change has to come when it comes to rubbish dropping in our town and surrounding areas.

We sincerely hope that this blog piece inspires somebody to take action for the good of the town and the local environment.
